Mission impossible? New cassette on an SL7 wheel

I've got a 2013 Response XE 29er, and I'm just about done with the crappy 7 speed altus RD setup. I'm looking at a full Shimano deore setup, but diamondback told me the rear wheel wouldn't take a new cassette. I currently have the Shimano HG20 7 speed cassette. Has anyone done this, or am I crazy for trying to upgrade these "tank" of a wheel SL7 wheelset?

You're crazy. LOL Those wheels are like boat anchors attached to your bike.

I have a brand new extra SL7 wheel with rotor, and an HG31 8speed cassette. Never been mounted...I haven't taken the cassette off to look at it. Maybe I will do that tomorrow. I'll measure it and compare to the oem SL7 wheel that came on my Pro which had an HG62 10spd on it...

Mission impossible? New cassette on an SL7 wheel

Thanks blackhawks...I already bought a different set of wheels lol...found out the freehub was some Taiwanese one with a course thread made only for the sl7 wheel I had...got a super deal on some specialized rockhopper takeoffs for now, they have a 8/9/10 speed freehub...after all my research, this did In fact turn out to be mission impossible lol...on the bright side, I learned how to teardown, and service my hub and bearings!
