What's better to upgrade first? Wheels or brakes?

I posted before about building up a new wheelset, but I think I will just use my old 29er wheelset for single track riding and keep my current set for road and cx training, but am not totally sure.

I will have about $500 saved up for my purchase. I can either go for a new wheelset with better hub and rims, buy better rims for my current hubs (tubeless ready rims - probably Stans Iron Cross or ZTR Crest) or go for a new set of brakes. The brakes would be TRP Hy/Rds.

Since you already have disc.... why upgrade the calipers immediately?

It's not like you have canti's and desire more braking versus the non-existent braking power of cantis.

So, imo, I would go with a new wheelset first.

what brakes do you have? ya if you already have discs get wheels. I'd get the iron cross as long as you never need to run more than 40 psi.

Sounds good. Spend the $500 on riding more.

Get a set of the Light-bicycle or similar XC carbon rims for approx $300, 21mm inside width, weight 370g and good for 70psi, then build them up on your old hubs.

I have a set built up on my CX and they are bulletproof.

Crazy, but I've been stewing on an IBIS Hakkalugi, with a mid range Campy drivetrain, TRP brakes, and building a set China hoops with WhiteInd centerlock hubs.....Wish that frame had fendermounts for the sloppy days.

They are great wheels, nice and stiff.... and way over built for CX, but the weight and width really give you the proper tyre diameter. A 33c is at least 33mm wide on them.
