    Under $275, Steel, Disc

Planet X Kaffenback $200 - Not much tire clearance (35c?)

Origin8 CX700 $225 avg - Would need paint, lots of grinding/removing of unnecessary braze-ons. Not that I'm opposed to that, but I've never done it.

This bike will be for my 5'6" girlfriend. We won't be riding much singletrack, so a monstercrosser isn't required. Why disc? I'll be buying a new MTB soon and my old bike will be donating parts.

I love the Soma Double Cross Disc, but its a hair out of my price range.

I've got 38C tires on mine, measure 1.34" wide. About .20 clearance at the chain stays.
I'm playing with a 29er Inbred with OnOne Midge drop bars, running both mtb wheels and tires and cross wheels and tires. With 1.30 wide tires, there is .50 clearance at the chain stays. Having a great time with that setup, would recommend as a fun bike.
