Quick question about Cat 4 or 5

For reference, I'm coming off my first season as a mid-pack Cat 3 XC racer and am starting in on cyclocross. My first race was a 3 day series in which they grouped Cat 4 and 5 together and the one race that I didn't have some kind of technical screw up, I finished 47 out of 77 starters. I have not upgraded my XC license to Cat 2, and probably won't until I have a few more races under my belt.

There's a cross race this weekend that I want to enter, however they have Cat 4 and Cat 5 in separate events. If I'm understanding the rules correctly, I have to race Cat 5, right? I can't race with the 4s unless I upgrade my XC category.

The main reason I'm asking is that the Cat 4 race is 45 minutes, vs 35 for the 5s. I'd prefer the longer race. But if I'm not allowed, not a big deal.

    Thanks.

Just do the upgrade request through your USAC account. As a Cat. 3 mountain biker, I doubt the local rep would even blink at giving you a 5 to 4 upgrade for cross.

Don't know why I didn't think of that right off the bat. I just sent in a request.

EDIT: And like that I'm a cat 4 racer. Now I'm guaranteed to never see a podium spot!
