New to CX: What bike to get

    Hello all,

So I am looking to pick up a CX bike here pretty soon. I intend to use it on dirt roads, paved roads, and some mild single track around my area. Prolly wont race, just some long distance adventures. I am really having a hard time picking the right bike for me. Ive set my budget at around $1500 so there are a lot of options. The Models I am looking at are:

    Jamis Nova Race
    Trek Ion CX
    Cannondale CAADX Tiagra
    Giant TCX SLR 2

My questions really are is the 105 components worth the money over the tiagra? Also is disc breaks totally necessary? I have only test ridden the Jamis so far, but found a shop with the Ion in stock so im gonna try and test that out. Is it too risky or order say a Giant or Cannondale without riding on it? Even though it "looks" good on paper. Additionally, are there other bike in my price range I should look at?

    Thanks for the help.

You should also look at the Felt 75x. Right in your range and a great bike.

Don't forget the Specialized TriCross. Great bike well within your price range.

I like the geometry of my tri-cross, it's much like their Roubaix with a higher front end than standard horizontal top tube designs, the bars just an inch higher than my road bike (both stems setup similarly) and to me that inch makes a huge difference in comfort. I almost never reach down for the drops on my road bike, but I actually use the drops on the tri-cross from time to time.

IMO, tiagra 4600 (10-speed) is the minimum I would buy. It's nearly as good as the older 105 (5600).

That being said, I have a CAADX tiagra

    There's the CruX

But... Big jump in price from the Sora to 105

If my budget was a little higher, I think I would go for the Crux. But like you said earlier, I want to stick with Tiagra at minimum.

That's why I didn't get the CruX. price of the 105 was well outside my budget.

2014 Raleigh's are available now. If you have a Raleigh dealer in town, I'd encourage you to ride one. I just got my RX 2 (105, carbon fork, disc brakes) last week; I've traveled across everything but snow with it since then and am very satisfied.
