Need your advice, newbie, first cyclocross bike purchase

So I've come to the conclusion that a cyclocross bike makes the most sense for my needs (road, off-road, commute, etc.). I've only been a mtb rider, but want to do more road riding, while still able to hop onto fire trails, gravel, and mellow dirt trails. I'm looking at an entry level bike, and have done some research, including this forum. I have a list of possibilities, and plan to test ride them, but having no experience, I'm not sure what I should be thinking about as I test ride them, and if you can help lead me in the right direction, that would also be great. Here is the list. Thanks for the input!

    Cannondale CAADX 7
    Redline Conquest
    Ridley X-Bow 20
    Felt F75X
    Focus Mares AX 3.0
    Scott CX Comp
    Masi CX Comp
    Trek CrossRip Elite
    Jamis Nova Race

I also only ride ss rigid bikes (NB for cx), but if I were to get some gears, the MM would be it.

I like my Ridley x-bow. Even though it is their entry level bike, it is pretty well equipped with 105 stuff. One thing to watch for with CX bikes is toe overlap with the front wheel, and front brake shudder on cantilever bikes. Those are 2 things I would say are a weakness on my bike.

Buy something cheap off craigslist. Cross bikes were never meant to be nice : )
If you spent more than $400 putting your cross bike together you spent too much.

It's not a cross bike without toe overlap and brake shutter.

I test rode a giant revolt @ the lbs and liked the ride not mention that it wont break the bank and that its worthy of upgrades down the line.

Yup. Mine shudders like a mofo and toe overlap caused me to crash once. It was slow speed and my own fault for not paying attention, but still something to be careful of.

If I were to do it again , I'd buy a disk bike. The Macho Man Disk would be on my list.

I have a Focus Mares 1.0 and like it alot.

That said my opinion on which bike comes down more to what LBS I like to deal with. There are lots of good bikes so me it comes down to the relationship I have with the lbs.

My shop carries trek, focus, salsa and surly and I liked the the Focus the best out of the choices from them
