It the Force rear derailleur too weak to be on a CX bike? I just cracked the carbon cage, It just missed the rear wheel. So my Question did Trek/GF spec the wrong parts on their CX bikes, as this is getting common where the cage cracks in the middle, Two years ago I had almost the same thing happen on a 105 setup and the rear delrailleur was bent not broken or cracked and I was able to bent it straight again. It the Force a Road derailleur? and installed on a off road CX bikel? Just asking as I think its it too weak for a fire road or tail with any chance of a small branch from a windy day to be in the trail/road.
I use Force in the back. I'm not at all worried. My friend runs Ultegra on his trail bike, the same bike he uses to race downhill. Road ders do fine on CX and MTB bikes, so long as they don't have to take direct impacts. A small branch from a windy day can destroy just about anything.
On the C&O canal easy flat section the rider in-front kicked up a small branch and I rode through it like I have done before but this time I guess my front tire kicked it up, When I stopped nothing was in or around the bike and the branch was laying about 50ft back so it was a clean tap smack dead center on the cage. I have heard of hits that moved the cage into the wheel for a total night mare so my event was a love tap, a warning shot, But still I have to replace the entire RD! On the Force only the inside of the cage is replaceable.
Due to the lack of comments I guess the Sram FORCE rear derailleur cage is 'not' weak! and In the end the hanger had to be replaced, so it must of been hit harder then I through. A little costly, If anyone would of suggested a different derailleur I might of switched. But that would of cost even more for the new shifters. Well see what breaks next.
