    Donor cross bike recommendations?

I live and commute around NYC and need a folding bike to get on the trains. I am looking at a Montague Crosstown with the intent of stripping it down to the frame and getting rid of the crappy Tektro/Suntour/etc junk and then taking the components from a decent geared cyclocross bike with disc brakes, decent components, and 135mm rear spaced hubs. This I might be able to ride year round, more snow = wider tires. So what low-cost or affordable second cyclocross bike would you recommend as a donor for this project?

I can't think of a particular one offhand, but I'd say look for something on clearance from Competitive Cyclist, Backcountry, or Pricepoint, etc.

Another good (better?) option would be to pick up something from Bikes Direct.com. No sense in paying good money for a name brand/quality frame that you aren't going to use.

I thought about a Bikesdirect.com purchase, but looking through their component mix on the bikes they sell, I wouldn't be eliminating much if any of the Tektro/no-name crap that the Crosstown comes with.

Also, I am not worried about "waste" because when all is done, I will have an extra bike to sell and ggt back some of the money I spend on this build.

That is why I am also looking to second-hand/older bikes. So it is really a question of finding a decent rig with disc brakes and 135mm rear spacing.

I'm trying to do the same thing but with the mountain bike frame. I think the drops will change how well the frame folds.
