Damn, that sucks but is good to know in case my Saber ever dies. Good choice on the Transition though, their warranty is amazing.

Piro:

Sorry about the news, I think the B52 is more similar to the Saber than their 5" offering. Disappointing to see that Azonic didn't feel the same way.

That said...good call on the Bottlerocket. I had opportunity to briefly ride my friends Bottlerocket last night at our local drop and dirt jump locale near Seattle (South Seatact; SST). A very diffrent and fun bike!

I run my Saber a bit big, with heavy xc wheels, large tires and a 7" Boxxer Ride fork. Its a bit of a tank. In comparison the BR isn't the lightest frame but its built intelligently and should last. Many riders in Washington State are riding Transitions hard and I've heard of no breakages. Where the Saber failed the BR will run for years longer in my opinion.

Even with its weight the bike felt quick and snappy, a function of more agressive geometry coupled with stiff/strong linkages. If you haven't already check out the linkages and chainstays, do so, theres alot of material there. No flex on this baby. Acceleration is quite impressive. The BR has less travel than the Saber's 6" but felt fine. My friend is running a Marz Rocco, both he and I are similar weight. On his BR the shock felt great. Plush but not overly so, it doesn't plow through the travel and ramps up nicely, probably a function of proper tuning but still a great shock. I have a Romic on my Saber, which has served me well with no reliability issues at all, but compared to how technology has improved the Roccos and DHXs look tempting.

All right time to toot my Saber Horn. Me and my bike are hitting Whistler this Friday for 3 days, I hope to report no breakage upon my retun. I'm somewhat concerned as I have two friends that have broken their Saber's in different incidents. Amongst us 3 there have been a total of 5 Sabers, two of which are still running. That said I'm still an Azonic fan, beleive it or not, as they offer decent frames at good prices, but I am wondering about differnt frames as my riding progresses. Part of me was hoping they'd help you out on a B52 as I've not found a single review anywhere of this new frame from Azonic. I'll do some more searching but if anyone has a line on a B52 review please post or provide a link.

Before I forget...

As a Saber-parting post, here are some links to my other past Saber-related posts (problems & fixes) from DH/FR forum that may come in handy for other Saber riders...

* fix for broken rocker-plate pin
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.ph...92253#poststop

* aftermarket shock-mounting pins
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.ph...36418#poststop

* no 6"-mode for 17"-size frame
http://forums.mtbr.com/downhill-freeride/help-saber-owners-qr-seatpost-clamp-bottoming-rocker-plate-105735-post991310.html#poststop
(NOTE: That posted ended with a clever rubber-washer solution, but in the end it still didn't work as one goes bigger & bigger and having to keep stacking more & more rubber washers. I ended up going back to only using 5"-mode on my 17" frame.)

* And some more here (from my earlier post above under this thread)...
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.ph...12642#poststop

Cheers,

PS.
ghashmi, thanks for BottleRocket info - very much looking forward to that. And glad to hear you & your friends' Saber's are still going strong!

My Saber performed so so at Whistler this weekend. I rode mostly A-Line and Dirt Mechant. My skill level on A-Line consists of landing the tranny on about half the jumps, others I'd pull up short of the tranny on the table. I bottomed both the front and rear multiple times. I'm soliciting suggestions on set up for bigger hits with the Romic; even the most basic info would be great. Also looking for pointers on fork set up.

Details:
My weight: 220 with pack
Shock: Romic 550 lb sping 2.0 stroke
Fork: Boxxer Ride stock spring...stock oil Note: Rebound Adjuster on bottom fork leg has gone awol)
Frame: Large Saber
Travel: 6" mode

undersprung

i'm amazed your saber doesn't look like pirochu's. i weigh 170 w/ gear & i'm using a 600x2.25 in 6". mine, like your's, probably came stock w/ that spring but setup in the 5" mode. the stock spring was 550. worked fine in 5" because of the lower leverage.6" mode gave me something like 45% sag. take a look @ yours. gotta be huge. the sooner you get the right spring, the longer you're gonna be happy w/ the saber. in the meantime i'd put it back in 5" to be safe.

coil-spring weight calculator

Glad to hear that you (& your Saber) had a good trip to Whistler. (Actually Whistler was where I broke my rocker pin, hahah... )

Anyway, I agree with nhodge about your coil spring being way too light, I'm afraid. So, before you break something...

Here's a very userful coil-spring weight calculator (thanks to FireDog46) that I've always used, and so far it's always spot-on for me.

Mountain Bike Spring Rate Calculator V4.0

You can play around with the numbers, but - entering your figures - basically you need a 800lbs spring for your weight in 6" mode. Actually 900lbs, if you change the Rear Weight Bias % to "70" from default "60". When I tried to measure my 17" Saber's rear bias, I seem to recall it was about 70 instead. (These figures per using default "25" % sag punched into the calculator.)

Just FYI, I'm only 165lbs (incl. gear) and I would be using a 550lbs spring, if in 6" mode (3:1 ratio). I actually used a 450lbs spring since I stayed in 5" mode (2.5:1 ratio), though. (These figures per using "70" % rear bias and "30" % sag punched into the calculator. I always left the Preload Adjuster to default "1.0" and End Coil Effect to default "60".)

I hope that this (especially the calculator) helps, and have fun tuning!

Anyone have Saber 19" geometry info they can share? '04 model frame. Trying to make the jump to a lighter steed and want to compare my existing Saber to other bikes out there.

Easiest thing would be to compare geo against your current frame. What frame and size are you on now?

yep, I'm aware of that method.

My most recent dually was a blur, large. At them moment I'm riding a ss voodoo so it's a bit difficult to compare.

I did have a medium heckler once but that was just a smidge to small.

2008 Azonic Revenge

Hey everyone,
Kind of new to this forum. I just got an 08 Azonic Revenge frame of ebay and I'm trying to figure out what I need to build it. Actually I need to know what type of front derailleur I need. Not much info on the web or bikepedia. Its my first full suspension, been riding an old 98 GF Big Sur forever. Also do you think it is necessary that I go with a thru axle on the front or should I stay with a standard QR. I live in Louisville, KY, most of the trails are smooth fast singletrack nothing too extreme, except Fort Duffield which still is tame compared to other places. Any info would be great
