    Weetamoo Woods

I've been riding this little gem for three days in a row. A little trail maintenance would go a long way, but I've managed to put together a 2 hour loop out there! There are lots of detours out there, and I found remnants of a XC race course with arrows and yellow tape marking the way. Very rocky and rooty and soft in between. Seems very underutilized (the course). Moose Racing is the name on the tape and arrows. Some of the trails were very overgrown and I found myself riding through the branches. There is a good hill with white paint slashes marking the way. A tough technical climb.

If anyone has more to add I'd like to hear. I go to Westport fairly often and now I know where I will ride!

What did you expect? Dude, you're asking about a place that by your own posting obviously isn't getting much use.

Go ride, track in some trails, thin some branches, try and kook up with some other local riders to work on some more trail.

fair enough. I was just hoping that someone knew something about the place. Intrigued by the fact that there was a race in there. Yellow tape, arrows, the whole bit, and a nasty course to boot! Maybe it's for dirt bikes?

North of Lafayette, there is a dirt bike course which abuts the "land". I know that when I rode, I was behind that place on 2 occasions. So I think the "race course" I found was for dirt bikes. That would explain the difficulty.

Regardless, I will cut more overgrowth, add more rocks and logs to clear the hardest stuff, and hope to see some more people enjoy this area.

P.S.- I drove the perimeter of the whole place and found that it is close to 2,300 acres! Heaven on Earth!

Hey there, I ride Weetamoo occasionally. I haven't completely explored north of Lafayette. I've pretty much gone only as far north as that house at the end of maple drive that has the little pond in the back yard. I've followed that old dirt road out to some atv trails that weren't very well maintained, but had a lot of potential. I did see the singletrack continuing north at the pond, but haven't been that way yet. I'll definitely have to check out that race course, are there a lot of other trails where the dirt bikes ride?

You've got me thinking about it and now my next ride will be at Weetamoo.

Next time I go I will let you know. I ride in Wompatuck mostly , with other Mass locations thrown in on occasion. But Weetamoo is a diamond in the rough. Lots of cool features and the only place in the area like it as far as I can tell. I went to Freetown, but it is the domain of the motor bike from what I can tell.

When is the last time you rode Weetamoo? Are you from that area?

I live in Westport, so Weetamoo is one of the closest spots to me. I've only lived in Westpost for just over a year, previously I lived in Somerset. I used to ride Freetown a ton, but its been in a declining spiral for years. Now they've even torn up the highway singletrack for a possible casino.

Mostly I ride Otis and whats now being called Abrams Rock. Abrams rock is in Swansea and its about 9 miles of single, double track and powerline roads. Not a lot of distance, but there is some good quality singletrack and some nice scenery packed into a small area.

I also ride Destruction Brook, but its on the lame side (Its the closest to my house though). Beautiful and quiet, but flat, wide horse trails. Great place to bring a beginner or kids.

It's been a couple of months since I've ridden Weetamoo, which is way too long, but I'm busy in the summer. Hopefully I'll get out there soon.

Nice. I rode Destruction Brook, and it is a nice place but very tame Never done Abrams Rock. I rode for a few hours in Freetown, and I felt like I shouldn't be there. Dirt bike land.
    Otis is flow.

But Weetamoo has a lot going on. If I lived near it, I would use it a lot. I found it to be similar to Wompatuck, which is my home turf, but less loved and not as big. But there are lots of ways around, and the whole North section is different altogether. Some technically challenging stuff.

I will be down in Westport the 19'th and a couple of weekends in early to mid October. I'll post up to let you know for sure.

I know that from the pond (in front of the house), you backtrack to the main drag and go toward Lake St. and the North part opens up on the left. It might be a fairly long ride to get to the entrance to that area as I recall. There are signs that say private property, but there are trails that get used and the park sign says respect private property / stay on marked trails, so...I did!

    I live in Westport, Ma.

Ive spent some time in both Weetamoo Woods and in Destruction brook. In fact I just did a 7 mile trail run at Destruction B yesterday.

Like you said, Destruction brook is very tame. The trails are really perfect for running but very tame for MTB.

Weetamoo is pretty cool. I usually make the drive to Otis (on the Cape) because I love that place. But occassionally I will ride Weetamoo since its only about 15 minutes from my house.

Just watch out for the one or 2 weeks in the summer when the deer flies come out. I pulled into the parking lot at weetamoo a couple years ago, backed into a parking spot, looked up and the windshield and hood of my car were literally covered in deer flies. Honestly I just wimped out and drove away.

Next time i head down to visit, I'll send a message to pick off a ride. Looks like you can do a solid loop in there. Have you ridden the area behind the dirt bike track?

I've ridden Weetamo once now, at first I hated it, but when I realized I was completely spent after a 1.5 hour ride, I was pretty happy. Way too many rocks, and the bugs are ridiculous. If any of you guys wanna ride out there in the coming weeks, I would be more than happy to. I ride Rigid SS. Also ICECREAMJAY, is Abrams Rock the same as Swansea Dam, where you can tuck in behind the middle school and ride along some creek and inlets, then you hit the powerlines etc.? I was told about that place from Bikeworks in Swansea and it might be my favorite spot, deffinitely in terms of closeness to Bristol.

Let me know about rides, since I'm new to all this and I've only got two guys who I ride with, but they're spotty. whereas I like to ride 3-5 times a week.

ts818, Yeah, abrams rock and swansea dam are the same ride.

I've been riding Freetown mostly lately. I've been riding the southern part, starting at Copicut Woods. Copicut woods is similar to Destruction Brook, wide, flat, scenic trails. Very quiet and peaceful, but not very technical. Fortunately there is a trail that connects the Horseshoe trail with the some moto trails to the north. These trails are quite technical and tight. There is some decent elevation, but its more gradual than the northwest part of Freetown, which has a lot of quick ups and downs.

My boss just mentioned something to me about wanting me to come in on wed. and he said it is in the air until tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully I will still be able to go, or maybe night would be a better option. Sorry this doesn't typically happen. I'll PM you my cell anyway, because i'm trying to get out for a ride there.

hey buddy, your not the only one... ive been going there lately. a buddy of mine knows the area very well and has many more trails off the beaten path that turns that place into a really nice plot of land. much better then whats around it atleast! a 2 hour loop? ive been trying to make a long ride there and found its limited for that... but still fun.
