Shimano PD T420 Pedal: How to take apart ?

My right pedal was not turning smoothly at all so I wanted to take it apart to clean, grease and adjust the bearings.

Before starting I checked the Shimano Tech Doc:
    http://si.shimano.com/php/download.p...-T420-3556.pdf

So from my understanding at first, I just would have to remove the 5mm hex bolt that is on the "outboard" side of the pedal, #7 in the tech doch. That did not help. I then figured the SPD cage is holding everything in place. So I removed the 3 bolts in the cage, did not help either (#9 in the tech doch).

Its the same on the other pedal so I assume I fail to see/understand something here, but I do not know what.

Does anybody know how to take this pedal apart??

There's a big fat knurled bit on the end of the axle near the axle threads. You need one of these to take it off. Obviously, you don't need to order it from there--any Shimano distributor will have it.

    Hello wschruba,

thanks a lot for your reply - that explains everything I guess. In the explosion drawing I did notice that that part is threaded but I figured it was remaining in the pedal somehow. So far I NOWHERE found any remark/clue that this extra tool is needed but a remark in the Tech Doc doesnt would not cost anything....

Will try to find that part in an LBS this afternoon, otherwise will order it online. I found it for 2€ online already, just with 3,95€ shipping costs :-/ But cheaper than any pedal anyway.

If it doesnt work I could try to convince Shimano to fix it for a low price or even ride until it totall breaks, then get the same ones new - I am pretty happy with them so far.

Will post again if there is any news.

    Thanks again!

Update: just came back from the shop, they fixed and regreased the pedal for 6E while I was waiting for it. They did not have the tool new in stock otherwise I would have bought it. Since it is not urgent now I am gonna buy it in my favorite online shop as soon as I need other stuff anyway.
