Are there any OEM dynamo bikes available for sale in the U.S.?

Was hanigng out w/ a buddy last night, he has a short commute, but doesn't bike. One thing that really interested him was a bike setup that didn't need batteries for lighting. I figure that technology might be the way to coax him into riding.

I couldn't think of any that had a dynamo setup as stock, and my quick searches here didn't come up w/ anything....

Anyone have a list of any bikes that come stock w/ a dynamo/lighting setup?

    Thanks---

All it takes is a new front wheel with a dynamo hub and a light.

... come ready to go with racks, fenders, lights and a bell, IIRC... at least some models. Beautiful bikes. Very elegant and well thought out. I want one.

Thanks FireBallKY and pimpbot, that's exactly what I was looking for.... awesome. Kinda got frustrated after searching for a while.

Schmucker, was looking for a turn-key solution for the buddy, as he is not the type to want to go out of his way to make it work (opposite of me), so I could've offered to go that route w/ him, but would rather just direct him towards something he could just buy off the showroom floor.

    Thanks!

I think Specialized also makes one in their Globe series of city bikes.

My mom was looking at one of these to replace her Diamond Back Ascent for city bike duties. She was looking for something European style, like her old Raleigh 3 speed.

I ride an '08 Specialized Globe City 7, which is last year's version of the Vienna bike mentioned above. It includes a Shimano dynamo hub which powers a strong LED headlight and tail light. When the wheels are turnin', your lights are burnin'. No worries about batteries. And the light generated is excellent, allowing me to ride at speed in total darkness and have a good view of where I'm going.

You can get a generator hub and build a wheel around it, or check with Peter White Cycles, a reliable distributor not only of the hubs, but built-up wheelsets for them (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/shimano3n70.asp ; and http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/headlights.asp ) The hubs run $100, plus the headlights themselves... and if you compare that to some of the high-end battery-powered light systems, that's extremely reasonable both for the convenience and the amount of light you get.

Sheldon Brown also has some good information on the Shimano generator hubs: http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/lighting/shimano.html.

My thoughts are that if you do a lot of night riding or commuting, you'll be very pleased with one of the Shimano or Schmidt SON hubs. Lots of light on demand (some peadling required); and you don't have to worry about charging your battery after every ride. I'm very happy with the setup on my Globe, and when I get a chance, I plan to put the same or similar rig on my Cross-Check commuter/utility bike.
