The taxi driver could easily have checked his mirror and warned the passengers of cyclists approaching. He wins no brownie points in my book. I can see the passengers having their minds on paying the cab and getting to their destination, and forgetting, but if a documented incident like this does not result in a penalty, then the law is useless. Distraction does not excuse liability. I also did not see it mentioned that a door edge is one of the most dangerous things a cyclist can run into. That shows the seriousness of the offense. A door edge will slice through a helmet into the skull. It appears the cyclist aimed for the crack in the door which is about all one can do. I also wonder if she had been male if she would have been accorded more respect. Just a thought.
