Before I was a cyclist, I was (and still am to a point) into cars and used to frequent some car forums. One of those forums, The Car Lounge, was a very mature car forum by comparison. The majority of the posters were opposed to distractions like cell phone use while driving. One time, someone posted about a study that was done several years back comparing the safety of hands free devices vs. holding a cell phone. The study found that hands free devices aren't any safer and it's not holding the phone that's distracting, but rather paying attention to the conversation and not the road. Well, certain parties who had a special interest did a good job of burying the results.

Admittedly I have no further info and no idea where to find said study, but I'm sure we can all agree that this wouldn't be at all surprising.

What really gets to me is how often distracted driving is treated as a joke on tv. Our loveable main character accidentally ran their car into something! Ha ha! It's so funny!

That pisses me off to no end.

I don't believe that videogames or metal create serial killers, but I do believe that treating driving like it is a joke leads to drivers who treat driving like it is a joke.

My wife's company fires employees caught using a cell phone in company vehicles.

I agree that adding voice processing is not a safe multitasking advance and like adding a keg and a tap on the dash, should not be permitted or the companies be sued for the resulting mayhem.

The radio or even conversation can be too distracting in heavy traffic.
