“What happens is you get a little bit of water which you think you’ll get through, then you get further along and your feet are wet and you’re up to your pedals, but it’s dry ahead and you think, ‘I’ll carry on’.

“Then the water was halfway up the wheels and you can feel the pull of the river and I thought ‘I’m going to die’, but I didn’t want to stop.”
