I'm 5' 9" and the medium feels good with a 70mm stem , but on the shorter side, so 6' may be a large with a short stem, great bike rides really good , up and down.

I have a meta 6 and went with an XL and I'm going to run a shorter stem. I'm 6'1" and have pretty long arms, so I'd say go with the large in your case.
You have just been mentally Rick Roll'd. Yup you're thinking about it right now aren't you? Don't fight it.

The Metas seem to run a tad small, so I would go with a large for you, unless you really prefer small bikes. But since the 553 is a trail bike, a large will suit the purpose of the bike best for someone your size.
