Steamboat Lake then North
Looking for ideas on mtn bike destinations within an hour or two from Steamboat lake (into Wyoming), as we've never been that way.
We are headed to Steamboat Lake for a weekend in July, then want to head up somewhere else for three+ days to bike/camp, etc. Will be traveling with pop-up trailer, and don't mind dispersed camping, however, like to be able to ride from camping, and meet family in town. Wife does not mind taking young ones to town to wait.
Thanks for any ideas/ suggestions!
No specific recommendations, but a little beta.
Encampment, WY is the first town you'll get to north from Steamboat Lake. It's really pretty around there. I never went riding there, but I did enter a drinking contest called the Woodchoppers Festival back in the early 80s.
I don't know specifically what the riding might be, but I had a student back in the mid-90s at CSU who was working as the marketing director for a little bike company that was operating out of Encampment. He told me they had good riding. I think there's a nice trail that follows the Encampment River...
Trivia question: the bike company in Encampment was called Outland. What were they known for? (no fair googling. If you don't know, shut your pie hole).
Lots of good, riding up around Steamboat Lake, and Big Red park, north of Hans Peak.
Plenty of camping anywhere you want.
I don't know about "rides to town". Not much up there, you are better off doing big loops from your camp.
