    High Altitude trip

Hi eveyone. I'm looking to spend some time at high elevation this summer to prepare for a trip to Patagonia. I'm hoping someone could recommend somewhere I could go for a week or so. I won't have a car, so it should be accessible by public transit. Basically a high altitude town with surrounding trails and a shop to rent from.
    Thanks for any help...

Above or near 9000' with great trails out the door and bike shops.

    Breckenridge 9600'
    Crested Butte 8900'
    Winter Park 9100'
    Telluride 8700'

I'd recommend Breck/Summit County due to the quality of the public transit.

Thanks for everything so far. A cheap hotel/hostel or nearby campground would also be ideal.

+1 ...I would go to summit county, easy public transportation even from the airport and into denver. Good public transport all around the county, and you're at a higher elevation than most mountain towns in CO. No shortage of peaks and trails to climb while you're there too.

crested butte and t-ride aren't good choices for ease of getting there from a major metro area.

Plenty of free camping all around CO on BLM/National forest lands.
