Gunnison Trails | Close to the KOA?

Dudes...I'm driving out west with the wife and dogs next month and we will be staying at the KOA in Gunnison. Wondering what kind of trail access there is close by? I'm debating on bringing the bike or not...we will be mostly hiking but if I can get some quick rides in, that would be mo' better.

    Thanks!

2 miles south of their is Hartman's Rocks, SUPERB trail system, absolutely diverse mix of trails, definitely take your bike and hit it up, but hope you also are bringing some lungs with the 7,500ft> elevation If you've never been out here before, do yourself a favour and don't miss out on popping over to Crested Butte and hitting up a trail or two out there, especially the 401 Trail. Attached a few pics from Hartman's, last pic id from the 401, enjoy.

Ohh, that looks tasty. Yeah, last year I brought my bike when we were in Carbondale for a week and did so much hiking I barely rode it. I'm training for the Park City Point 2 Point race so it would be nice to get my ass kicked at elevation for a few days. I actually do better with altitude than I do with humidity here in Atlanta. Pictures look rad, thanks for the info!

Can't tell you, don't know if you're just slightly off your rocker or completely Me personally with the altitude and climbing, I'd most definitely want gears and the terrain lends itself to a modern, slacker bike.

Any bike will work there. I've ridden my singlespeed 29er, 'cross bike, and fat bike. There's plenty to choose from. Dave at the KOA is a top-notch guy. Bring him a 6-pack and bring some extra mixed nuts for the lawn mowing crew.

Not likely this is from the Crested Butte trail report

Conditions: June 3rd, tw13 - Still surprisingly snowy in many sections. On and off the bike for long distances of snow. Muddy, heck yes! It could change in one weeks time but for now we definitely say -
    NOT RECOMMENDED!

I'm from the East Coast, (Montreal, Canada hey...) and I rode my 26" singlespeed 32X19 and had tons of fun. Yeah' you'll breathe harder but you won't die. I am 55 years-old and NOT in race shape.

    Enjoy it!

Great Info. I'll be in Gunnison after the CB Enduro. Then heading to Fruita, additional suggestions are appreciated, well most are.

You can drive all the way up to the upper parking lot and go hike from there, see what conditions are like, if it's got some snow, no big deal hiking and it's a beautiful place to hike or chill by the little lake.

Go ride Doctor's park. 401 is still snowed in on top.

Well, haven't ridden Gunnison yet (my wife doesn't ride so I do more hikes than riding). However, we hiked Snograss today up in CB. Holy. $hit. I'm riding that on Wed fo'sho' !

Connect Snodgrass (from town) down to the Lupine trails down to Lower Lower loop then back to town that should get you into the 20+ mile zone.
