I don't live in Durango, but in Steamboat it is impossible to know in January how much snow we will get, and when it will melt off.

In late April early May there is only Horse Gulch, Test Tracks, Twin Buttes around town and Alien, Phils, Sand Canyon near by. You may be able to ride to High Point on the CT or some of the mid country rides like Hermosa, Jones, Pinkerton, Dutch.

    Condition in Durango now?
Worth a side trip first week of May while swinging through Fruita & Moab?

Cortez, which can be on the way to Durango from Moab, has Phil's World. Which kicks total a$$. Then you could hit some of the Durango stuff that's lower. You could enjoy at least one day in Durango, but you'll REALLY enjoy your day at Phil's. It's as good as anything in Fruita, IMHO.

But, if you want to see the stuff that makes Durango legendary, gotta wait until summer. (Not June 1, real summer which starts on the solstice).

If you were coming through Durango, High Point isn't open yet, but you can take the Colorado Trail to Hoffhiens and up Dry Fork normally known as the Lollipop Loop. It makes for a nice 15 mile ride and gives you a taste for what some of the riding around here is like. While you were on that, you could head up the CT until you hit snow to get an extra mile or two in.

The stuff around town is pretty fun too, but you forget when there is so much other fantastic riding. There is Horse Gulch, Test Tracks and Twin Buttes. It would be easy to get 40 miles of riding out of those and you could get more out of them if you got creative.

If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like a bikepacking ride on the Durango Dirty Century route may not be an option for the weekend of June 6-8th due to snow at the higher elevations?? Sounds like there are plenty of other options a bit lower in elevation. Coming up from Phoenix to enjoy some cool riding now that the desert is beginning to cook.

I would think riding that route that early in June would be risky. There will definitely be a lot of snow in places.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I just started poking around that trails2000 site (very helpful, btw) for conditions & other options.
