New question here. Cortez Riding In February?

I have a buddy moving to Cortez at the beginning of the year, and I'm planing on visiting him the first week of February.
I know Cortez sits at 6000 feet, so I'm wondering, what's the snow fall like, and are there enough trails open to get some good rides in?

I got a chance to ride Phil's World 2 years ago in September, and what a blast!

So, any chance of riding dirt the first week of February?

That time of year Sand Canyon would be your best bet,

Really depends on the year. Early February would not be in the typical expected date range for Phil's World, and this year is so far looking like a real winter. But all that could change.

When you get there check in with Kokopelli Bike and Board. Awesome good shop. They'll be able to tell you exactly what you want to know.

(from Cortez you could be-bop down to Farmington, NM also. They have a bit longer season, a little lower)

I've been riding Cortez the past 5 winters. February is rough. For reference, I usually hike Sand Canyon around mid-February to check on trail conditions. They are usually not good. End of February/early March is usually when I start riding down there, but Sand Canyon has a bit of slick rock at the beginning so if the trails are too muddy I'll just ride in circles on the rock. That only lasts about 30 minutes.

Phil's World usually isn't ready until April.

Great info! I'll let him know we may need to head to New Mexico!

Other options may be Fruita or Moab. As TomP mentioned, all depends on the year.
