    Hi SD!

I wish I could ride outside with you, but I have lunch plans in Boulder,
not to mention my coach has me riding the trainer both Tuesday and
Thursday! Man, that guy is cruel!

I had a great ride at Cherry Creek State Park on Sunday: did 30 miles in about
2.5 hours, and only got two flats!

Want to try to ride in Ft. Collins (Horse Tooth) this weekend? I'm doing String
Cheese Saturday, so Sunday? (assuming I'm not too hung over)

TWO flats? How'd you manage that? I haven't had an on road/trail flat in six months, at least! Off for a road ride in the sun....

even just thinking that is asking for trouble...

Upset light tires == magnet for goat's heads!

    Hi Stef:

I started noticing the back getting soft about 1/2 from the end of the ride,
but I thought I was just getting tired. (You know that feeling, where you
think the tire must be flat, but it's just your legs? )

I kept going, and the back got flatter. I slowed down and Philster left
me in the dust, but I had to fight my urge to keep up to save the rim. Then
a cute lady passed me and I had to keep up! (blast the darned rim!)

The when I caught up with Phil (he waited), I CO2-ed the rear tire in hopes
of making it back the last 2 miles to the car w/o having to change the tube
(I always cary two spare tubes). I made it back, just barely, but both
tires were quite soft by then.

And how, you might ask, did these flats occur: evil evil goat's heads! Phil says
he had about 20 goats heads, but he uses slime in his tires. I don't, since I
train how I race, i.e. light tires and no heavy-ass slime.

And I agree, btw, with Debaser: don't temp the flat gods! If I hadn't made a
sacrafice I don't think I would have made it back to the car.

I don't have to worry too much about the Flat Gods, as I've DH tires with a liter or so of non-Stan's Stan's sealant in them.

Anywhoo, plunk down the $22 for some Stan's rimstrips, and I'll give you the sealant necessary to convert to [mostly] flat-proof tubeless. It's the same weight as tubes, and I know only one person (personally) to have gotten a flat on the trail...but it proved to be a result of his Conti's sidewalls, and not the tubeless set up. I could literally drive screws through Pythons (as thin and weak as they come) and not have a flat; goat's heads be damned!

    Dude:

I'm stickin' with what I race with. You can pry my light, hand built, tubed semi-slicks from my cold dead body (to steal scrub's sig ). I only get flats on bike trails, where the
goaties love to roam. Trails are never a problem (since I have a zillion pounds of
    pressure in my tires).
