Trail Conditions at Heil/ Marshall Mesa?

I'm renting a FatBike for the weekend for fun and I'm going to be in Boulder this afternoon- any snow on them trails? Or are they just mud and ice?

Heil is just mud and ice based on ranger reports. It's pretty warm up here. Go higher like Sourdough or SSV.

It has been above freezing since around 10am yesterday in the Boulder area, didn't even go below freezing over night. Thinking it is going to be a serious mud bog in the BoCo area for the next couple days.

The ranger at Hall (one of the quickest places to dry out given its south facing aspects) said long muddy sections. Try West Magnolia area.

Be prepared for some horrendous winds. Hopefully the trees block some of it.
Expected wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Yeah- I was hoping it might not be as bad further up... might end up not happening if conditions are that bad...

Not looking good up there. The trees will offer some shelter at West Mag, but there is also going to be a lot of blowing snow.

Trees offer protection until they come crashing down. Remember, most dead fall happens in the winter.

Ugh- sounds like I'm pushing it. Looks like I'll forego the attempt today. Might try to get out tomorrow...

For those interested in Heil, after a trail run there yesterday morning I posted this on FB's Colorado Front Range Trail Conditions page:

"Ran Heil Ranch>Wapiti>Ponderosa Loop this morning. Difficult conditions for running, as expected: packed and icy on Wapiti, with a breakable crust over 4-5" unconsolidated snow up top on the loop. Microspikes would not be a bad idea."

Hope that helps. Todays warm temps and wind will undoubtedly change things.

There's a picture of the trails on BMA's fb page via OSMP. Looks downright soupy.
Take the long cut, we'll get there eventually.

    Mag

Things had settled down and I headed up to west mag. It was awesome. The snow was a little too deep still in most spots, but I was able to get some good stretches in and took a spin on the hard- packed snow road and that was super fun too (on my mobile, so I'll post pics later). Trees were a great wind block and it as a gorgeous afternoon.

    PBR- see you Sunday.
