Tara Llanes injured at Beaver Creek Sat.

    [From VeloNews.com: http://velonews.com/race/mtn/articles/13205.0.html]

American four-cross and BMX rider Tara Llanes (Giant) broke her back during the third round of the Jeep King of the Mountains series, on Saturday in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Llanes crashed during the semi finals, where she dueled with longtime rival Jill Kintner.

Llanes was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center where she underwent seven hours of surgery to address the massive trauma suffered on her lower back. Doctors also diagnosed a C-7 fracture which was deemed stable prior going into surgery.

Accoding to her family, Llanes is currently breathing without assistance, but reports no feeling below her waist.

"We will continue to learn more about her injuries in the upcoming weeks and will continue to keep you posted," a statement issued by her family noted. "Since coming out of surgery, Tara, drugged and very happy, has kept in good spirit and has promised not to let this beat her.

"We ask that you have as much faith as Tara does throughout this difficult period. In the meantime, we are hoping Tara will be able to come back home in 1 to 2 weeks."
Wishing Tara the best in her recovery...

Wife and I just today were talking about spinal injuries and how we would deal. Not sure I could.

No, it was LG-2 out of Frisco; I was on nights at the time. It's definitely not good...

Wow. This is too weird. I was just in the LBS a couple hours ago discussing Tara Llanes' racing background and her Maxim photo shoot. I was also explaining to the guys that I gave up DH and freeriding because of a bad neck injury.

Best of luck to her. Glad to hear she's staying positive. It makes all the difference in Physical Therapy.

Damn. They're reporting that she's paralyzed.

I hope it's only temporary from the swelling, or something.

The initial report indicated severe trauma. Not a good thing with a spinal injury. Tough situation and it brings to light the dangers of sports. But it also brings to light our daily calculated risks to push our passion.

That article is based on the same report as the initial one, they both report no feeling below the waist with no prognosis yet. Given, it does not sound good, at least this article is not reporting any worse condition.

Best luck to Tara in recovering, we wall want to see you back on the course.

Angel Fire in 2005, she was looking good. So hot, she had her name on her ass for all those behind her to be reminded of who kicked their ass!

Yeah, that article is based upon the initial report, so it's no more accurate than VeloNews' info. The C7 fracture was the least of her issues, unfortunately.

Last November I suffered a neck injury when I crashed headfirst into a tree. Ruptured 3 discs and was paralyzed from the neck down for about an hour. After sensation returned to me, I also discovered the agony of nerve pain from a spinal injury. For weeks it felt like I had 3rd degree burns over my arms and hands. That is something I hope I never have to go through again. Part of my recovery was getting back on the bike and having read of some of Tara's horrific crashes, I emailed her and asked her what gets her back on the bike after getting hurt. She sent me a very nice email that she clearly put a lot of thought into. Several times throughout the months, she sent me emails (usually after times that I had told her I had doctors appointments) asking how things were going, which was very thoughful. She's a great girl my prayers are with her!

'01 Tara photo with my daughter

Here is a picture of Tara with my daughter from back in '01 at the World Championships in Vail - this is just after the podium - 3rd place finish for Tara in the duals. She was so friendly and more than happy to oblige for the photo!

Serious bummer, I hope she has a speedy recovery. I happen to be recovering from a back injury myself and it sucks. Not as severe as Tara's though.

Voodoosix - how is your recovery coming? Are you fully healed?
