    Springs Evening Ride 7/20/11

What do we want to ride this week? The forecast is calling for a 30% chance of afternoon showers on Wednesday--I wonder if that will happen or not. If no rain, I'm kinda jonzen for some Palmer Park, but I'm up for anything.

I am out this week. My wife tore her meniscus. I need to help out since lifting kids is against doctors orders for her. On a happier note I might be picking up the Enduro this weekend.

Yeah, we usually meet at the parking lot just inside the west gate with the locked bathrooms (kinda by the stables off of Paseo and Chelton). I'll probably be there a little before 6:00pm, but let's aim to start at 6:00. If anyone is coming later than that, PM me and we can arrange a later meeting point via cell phone.

Once I get the Enduro we'll have to have another Templton day... No better way to compare that bike against the Stumpy.

You won't ever need to twist my arm to get me to ride Templeton--it's my favorite trail in the whole wide world! In fact, it's kinda what I had in mind for the ride anyway if everyone else was cool with that. So now the real question: Clockwise or counterclockwise????

Keep an eye on this thread this afternoon! They are saying it's a 40% chance of rain, but I'm guessing it's going to be a 100% chance of lighting. We may need to decide on a Plan B option at the last minute.

Anyone have any ideas on what Plan B should be? It seems like we've been hitting the canyon a lot lately. rcjonessnp175, Colo Springs E, and bmaddock (and anyone else planning on showing up who I don't already have contact info for), PM me your cell phones in case we make a change offline.

    Monument

Yesterday we had a killer lightning storm role over AFA round 4:30, by 6 pm storms were off the mountain heading east. Might be a good choice to ride closer to the mountains

Wish I could join but the taxi must keep moving.
    Have fun.

Yeah, we had the same system fly over our house. I was planning on cooking a pizza on the grill but decided to use the oven when I saw the storm. It rained lightly for about 2 minutes, but the lighting was pretty bad--I wouldn't want to be on an exposed mesa like PP during a storm like that.

Weather update @ 2:15: It looks like the storms are breaking north over Pikes Peak today. There is another system building behind Pikes Peak at the moment and I'll continue to track how it breaks. As of yet, there has been no precipitation anywhere per NOAAs storm total radar. Plan A is still in effect.

I should be down for this ride tonight as long as the weather holds out. There is some nice lightening strikes going on right now over the peak. 3:18ish.

Not sure. We've done the canyon a lot lately which is the go-to place when it rains--not sure if we want to hit that again. I don't think Monument is a great choice today since there's a big "red" cell over Mt. Herman now.

I might be calling you (and everyone else) with a meeting place on the west side of town if Plan A doesn't pan out.

I concur. It doesn't look like there is much energy behind the mountains either so I don't think we should have any problems.

See you guys at the park!

The ride was great! I felt all wonky when we started, but the feel of techy climbing slowly came back to me. There was a fair bit of blood drawn on the ride. I got a scrape on my thigh (above the knee pad), and Eric and Brad both made trail sacrifices (anyone else?).

I was joking with Arin, Jay and Rich that on one of these rides, I will be the only non-Enduro rider--those bikes are like the Nomad was 5 years ago .

Ha! I left so much blood on them rocks they may need to get a hazmat team out there to decontaminate!

I had a blast, been a looooooong time since I've done anything that brutal. I'm 48 now, I was probably 28-30 yrs old last time I tackled any of that stuff at Palmer. I made a couple of pieces I had no business making and completely screwed up several that I should've cleared-- good times.

I had an excellent view of an endo by Brad... he went flying but recovered really well though. (how's the knee, by the way??)

I'm out next week, will be in the nice cool, serene paradise known as Phoenix, Arizona. (That's me on fire next week)

Nice! We had a sales meeting there two years ago in July during a particularly hot summer (kinda like this one). It really wasn't that bad except for your shoes sticking to the melted hot pavement. Have fun!

Sorry to have missed the ride, but the 'old' Nomad was in the shop for repair work on the fork. The Talas no worky. Freakin thing only works for 4 years and 'then' it needs some maintenance. Cheap Fox crap.

    Bike is back now though...

Sounds like a typical Templeton ride. Bloody...

I agree with K-man, that is probably my favorite technical trail in COS!

Templeton trail draws more blood and breaks more bikes than any other trail I know of around the Springs.
Wish I could've been there! Although, at the moment I have no wounds... I'll be ready to disrupt this Enduro party.

That is a goal of mine, but i have to say, I haven't even tried riding Templeton on the SS yet. I just don't have the low speed, techy climbing down on the 32x21 enough that I wouldn't be wasting my time. On the other hand, I'll never develop the skilz unles I try... Wanna do an SS PP day Kip?
