City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks has asked for comment on specific items. They are considering these measures now:
1) new educational programs and signs
2) working with stakeholders to increase trail-sharing etiquette
3) adding features to the trail to reduce the speed of bikes.
And more restrictive actions could be taken such as an alternating use schedule.
For now they would like to hear responses on these questions:
1) Are the current management actions an appropriate initial response for mitigating conflict?
2) After implementation, should conflict be assessed before considering an alternating use schedule?
3) Do you recommend that an alternating use schedule be implemented along with the other management actions?
4) If so, what type of schedule do you believe to be the most effective for Spring Brook Loop?
Examples of alternating use:
Alternating time of day for use
Saturday mornings dawn to noon: pedestrian only
Sunday afternoons noon to dusk: biking only
One time period per week
Special or specific days for alternating activities
The first Saturday of a month: pedestrian only
The last Saturday of a month: biking only
One day per month
Alternate between weekend days (either even/odd or by day Saturday/Sunday)
Saturday: pedestrian only
Sunday: biking only
Monday through Friday - shared use
One day per week
Select specific and consistent days of the week for alternating activities in addition to weekend days
Wednesday and Saturday: pedestrian only Thursday and Sunday: biking only
Two days per week
Alternate between activities daily; either even/odd numbered days or by weekday Mon/Tues/Wed etc.
Odd days: pedestrian only
Even days: biking only
Three to four days per week
Additional Alternative Use Day Questions:
1) Should an alternating schedule only apply during months/season of highest visitation (i.e. May through September)?
2) Should equestrians be included with hikers or not included in an alternating schedule?
