Has anyone participated or is going to participate in the race down in Salida? I havent really raced before and this one sounds interesting. Any comments/ knowledge/ pointers would be nice
I raced it about 4 yrs ago. It was very grass roots. The do a huge mass start with a escort pacing you out of town. All racing classes. It was a a cool race, nice and long. Overall I would say it would be a good first race just because of how laid back it is, but as I said before, it is pretty long. Figure on being out for about 2-2 1/2 hrs. I guess depending on your fitness level.

I personally have never raced, but from what I have heard about it I would bet it would be an excellent race for you to give racing a try. There will be plenty of others riding who are not serious racers, as well as local riders who don't race with the exception of this yearly banana belt ride.
Its 22 miles point to point, and you will encounter some great singletrack and cool people.
I am going to race in it....I have never raced before but it sounds pretty casual, has anyone found race results for it online? I can't find any. I am going to do it as my first race its a week from sunday. I just rode the mah daah hey trail in north dakota that was sweet so I am hoping to be in good enough shape for it.

They rarely get the results online. It's always in the local paper. I think the first couple years I did it results came out online, like a month after the race.
The Banana Belt Loop is a fun race. This year will be my ninth consecutive. Really fast dudes finish in the 1:40-2 hours range. There will be some taking over 3 hours. Big loooong climb at the start.
I was going to race it, but found out the wife had bought tickets for "A day with Thomas" up in Golden for the same day, so I guess Ill be up there with my boys spending a day with Thomas the Tank Engine... Oh well nothing like watching my kids get to enjoy one of their favorite things...
well....
it went really well, considering that I just moved here and haven't been biking consistently lately I am totally happy with how it went. I had to walk a couple of the harder sections near the end of the 6 mile uphill off 50 before the rainbow trail began which obvioulsy wasn't that fast of a method lol (due to exertion not technical difficultly)
it was raining off and on which was fine, pretty solid trail for the most part. It was a really fun loop and I did the 26 miles in 3.5 hours which isn't winning any medals but I will keep at it. I am excited for the race and happy about finding a cool loop to do right out of town.
I decided to ride the split race at just under 13 miles instead of the 26 miler, it went well, made good time and had fun. Next year I plan on the banana belt full loop after more time conditioning this year...
