Rollinsville/ East Portal access - off topic/ NOT bike related

Sorry to all affected by the floods. My basement was flooded out but am still greatful as it could of been a lot worse. Just need a carpet replace.

I am planning to take my daughters backpacking this weekend starting at the East Portal trailhead. I understand hwy 119/ boulder canyon and hwy 72 are closed so we will be coming up 119 from the south through Blackhawk.

I have searched online and don't see any road closures this way. Has anyone heard anything I am missing?

    Thanks!

That way is all open. It is the only way into and out of Estes from this side of the divide, so I imagine it will have more traffic than usual.

    Good Luck!!

Yes, 119 is open from Ned down to Blackhawk without restriction.

I had heard sunshine canyon was open, but not sure how accurate that is. Do not know where to go to check the status.

According to this, Sunshine is closed near town and even if it wasn't, you can't get all the way up to P-2-P anyways:

A family member of mine has been getting in and out of Ned through Sunshine; however, they won't just let any tourist through at this point, I believe.

Correct. There's a CSP checkpoint at the base of Sunshine. You need ID with a mountain address to get through.

Rumor is that Coal Creek (72) may reopen today, but there may still be a similar checkpoint.

That would be incorrect. Sunshine > Gold Hill > P2P.

Oh well... looks like that's a moot point anyways given the CSP checkpoint.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll just monitor cdot and if something changes it will be a plus. Otherwise going though blackhawk only adds about 30 mins of driving. Im coming from Westminster.

I posted this in another thread but whether it's closed or not, due to limited access to peak to peak hwy, they are encouraging people to not go into the mountain areas because any emergency situation gets magnified if people are using roads unnecessarily. I think I would respect the residents of Nederland, Ward, Allenspark, Rollinsville, etc who are in a position if they have to get around for a critical situation, they don't need people just coming up to hike, camp, etc on the extremely limited number of roads.

Right now people, supply trucks, etc who have to go from Ned to Boulder or vice-versa have to use Sunshine-gold hill which is 4wd presently. Or Golden gate or Blackhawk. They don't particularity want tourists at this time adding to the congestion.

Well said, Lidarman. Why not take your family to do some volunteer work instead? Many people need help.

Ned is just about back to normal aside from the surrounding road access, but our local businesses are starting to feel the hurt from the lack of visitors. Stop in Ned or Rollinsville for some food and coffee if you want to help out up here.

Gold Hill is just fine for a 2wd, but very overloaded with local commuting traffic. Suggest sticking with the published open public routes and really watching your speed (Gilpin PD is very eager to assist if you don't).
