The purpose of the hearing is to take public testimony on opening the Rollins Pass Road. This testimony will give the Board important information regarding support for the reopening of the road and will help better define impacts associated with this proposal.

All are more than welcome to attend and participate. The hearing will also be webcast live and will be achieved for viewing at a later time. The website for watching the hearing is: Commissioners' Hearings and Records

Meaning reopen Rollins Pass to cars right? Not sure I have an opinion, I've only ever road my bike over the pass. I guess it would be cool to be able to 4x4 over too. Are they thinking reopening the tunnel or just a new road over the top.

Do you have a better link for the actual meeting? The commissioner's link doesn't seem to have anything specific, and I'm lazy.
Take the long cut, we'll get there eventually.

Kaj - I believe the intention is to considering re-opening the NE tunnel and the closed section from it to the Grand County portion. The only other real option would be to rehab the BWR, and I think that would take much more work to do safely.

Please keep us posted if you do find something.

It seems a double edged sword... easier access to that area could bring more texas wheelchairs, etc...

This is a good article on the meeting regarding the Moffat Road. Grand Mountain Bike Alliance (IMBA Chapter in Winter Park/Grand County) has identified this area as a key connector in bridging Winter Park and Boulder as well a the front range.

ugh Boulder County politics... sometimes it makes me hate living here.

I for one would love to be able to get to WP, Fraser, Devil's Thumb, etc... for alpine and Nordic skiing and MTB without dealing with the cluster that is I-70.

The cynic in me feels like the only way this would ever come to pass is if some kind of casino went up in Grand County. Notice how quickly the Central City Parkway got established once those casinos were a thing.

You think they'd plow, do avalanche control and maintain that road in the winter?

I'll bet a lot of people who put their money into the Central City Parkway had it back. FOr what it cost it hasn't made much in a difference in the fortunes of Central City's ability to compete with Blackhawk.

The BoCo Commissioners threw out enough red herrings during the meeting to feed half of Boulder.. then Pearlman tossed in a pretty awesome interpretation of his take on the Wilderness Act. It's abundantly clear the current administration has no plans to change the status quo.

It would be a summer only route. Not paved but useable by 2wd vehicles.

“Rollins Pass Road. —If requested by one or more of the Colorado Counties of Grand, Gilpin, and Boulder, the Secretary shall provide technical assistance and otherwise cooperate with respect to repairing the Rollins Pass road in those counties sufficiently to allow two-wheel-drive vehicles to travel between Colorado State Highway 119 and U.S. Highway 40.”

I wonder if "technical assistance" includes repairing the creaky trestles on the other side of the tunnel. I can't imagine watching someones' Prius from Boulder try to navigate those as is, much less a 2-ton SUV from Tehas.
