Roan Cliff Chaos
Hey Everybody,
Has anyone raced the Roan Cliff Chaos in Rifle? I just got hooked up with the guy who coordinates the race, and I'm going to try to give him an extra pair of hands getting the race going. I think it's slated for June 15-16th this year. Thought I would check with the Frontranger's since so many of you guys and gals race.
1. Just curious if anyone has raced it?
2. If you did, were there any pro's or con's?
3. Things you'd like to see? (in this race or any race)
Thanks for any feedback y'all.
(Mod's- I also posted this in the Western Slope forum. Hope I'm not in cross-posting trouble?)

jimmy- Thanks for asking. Here is an idea of the basic setup, but it might change a little this next year. But only additions, no subtractions.
Two day event:
Day 1- Cross country race on single/double track at the JQS trails. One lap is 6 miles (I believe). Beginners= 1 lap, Intermediate= 2 laps, Pro= 4 laps
Day 2- Hill climb to the top of JQS. beg/int/pro all do same course.
It's a pretty grassroots kind of setup. Right now it's a pretty small field. Competition ranges from locals to some serious pros (Not sure if I am allowed to drop names?). A little something for everybody. I'm going to try and get some new things rolling this year, but not sure what's going out pan out yet. Maybe clinics, social events, a dh race? Not sure yet.
I'm working on a website with more info as we speak. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

If YOU can make it to the top of the hill climb, I'll buy you dinner!
In the past, prizes have been cash, and the amount usually depends on the number of entries.

I just read some blogs about last year's race. Seems like a fun weekend, and something I'd be up for!

Not sure how many folks on the front range would be interested in this, but I thought I'd throw it out there. I wanted to run this by my mtbr folks right off the bat and see what you think? I've been putting in a lot of time on trying to make this race into an event. Let me know what you guys/gals think?

Not true! As part of your sponsorship package, you get a trail building clinic or Trailside EMT clinic completely free!
If you buy a pasta bowl at the post-race party, I'll give you free beer!
Plus, it normally costs $25 per race, but I'll give you both for $40! Can't wait to see that Claymore on the hill climb! You'll win for sure.
(All of these sponsorship packages apply to all participants and spectators)

Aw man I would love to go do the XC but its in direct conflict with the Winter Park HC - my husband and I are in for the WP series this year and of course the HC is a major focus for him. Personally I'd rather do a new XC course than a boring HC but it is the one event he stands a good chance of a podium at so I don't see him changing his mind :P

No worries. I "think" that the WP race is the only one we collide with. Which is pretty good considering this is Colorado! I'm sure they will put on a good event.

Interesting. I just looked up the race and found out there are a few pros and cons for both. I'm not trying to persuade anyone, just seeing how the Roan Cliff Chaos stacks up against a more sponsored race. Especially since both races have a hill climb. It looks like a cool race series.
WP- 5 miles @ 2,000 ft climb (start 9000ft)
RCC- 8 miles @ 3500 ft climb (start 6000ft)
WP- 1 race= $40
RCC- 2 races= $40
WP- t-shirt with race series only
RCC- everybody gets a shirt
WP- Coors (yuck)
RCC- Rifle Brewery!
I'm guessing that the podium payouts are better at WP? But I couldn't find any evidence to back that up.

WP only pays cash to the pro field. Everyone else gets pint glasses. And I think their entry fees have gone up this year.
You're preaching to the choir bro, it's more that I probably won't be able to convince the spousal unit to skip basically the biggest focus event on his calendar (because he's also gunning for WP series points / high series finish and the HC is the one event he stands to do really well at). Rifle is a fairly far haul for us Boulderites, but that said if it were up to me (and I had my own car which I do not; we share one vehicle) I'd prefer to drive out and stay somewhere and check things out.

I wasn't trying to "convert" anyone, I just wanted to check it out for myself. Especially since not a lot of events have hill climbs these days. (who wants to ride up hill?) I bet they run a really classy race.
Rifle is about 3 hours from Boulder (I used to live on 20th/Arapahoe). If you make it out this way to explore, let me know and I'll show ya some trails. Even if you don't come to the race!

Bump
Website is updated! We have some new sponsors, more clinics, an after party and lots more. Registration is open and we are getting ready for June!
The only thing left is to get a Strava segment and some video. Hopefully this weekend?
