Ride invite - Old Flowers Road Saturday June 6 - Dawn Patrol

A few of us are riding Old Flowers Road, west of Fort Collins, on Saturday, June 6. Feel free to join us.

Meeting at JJ's (corner of Taft Hill and Harmony) at 6:00am to carpool.
Hoping to be wheels down around 6:45am

    Description:
    Moderate pace
    32 +- miles
    3000-3200 ft climbing
    Pavement, jeep road, dirt road
    Roughly 3.5 - 4 hour loop

We'll park about 1 mile west of the intersection of Buckhorn Canyon Road and Stove Prairie Road, ride down to Stove Prairie Road and climb it to Old Flowers. We'll take Old Flowers west to the Monument Gulch road and take it back to Buckhorn Canyon and back to the cars.

    Who is in?

Not sure yet if I can. But I want to!!!

This one can be ridden with all kinds of bikes. The HT makes you rule on the long Buckhorn Canyon dirt road climb. The FS let's you fly down the few but fun/steep DH sections faster and/or more comfortable. I would recommend about anything between a rigid and a 5" FS for a moderate paced ride.

If this would be a race: HT.

Doing the ride counter clock-wise, so no long Buckhorn climb, but shorter paved climb instead. llama, so far we have 2 soft tails (me, Matt), one 4" FS, and maybe one rigid SS (volkstech).

sounds like fun....but given my current state of slowness I'm going to pass, plus I have to work Saturday morning (thats a better excuse). 30+ miles would probably kill me right now anyway. Have Fun

The last 12-13 mi is all down hill and screaming fast. On a weekend you might have to brake to avoid rear ending a car. !

Kaba nailed it, but I think even a FS is overkill. I loved mine on the DH's, but hated it on the extended climbs.

Plus the first 5 mi doing it as described, includes a 16% grade climb right out of the gate as a warm up, and then a sustained 8-10% climb.

sgltrak: "Box Canyon ", don't you mean Monument Gulch ?

If my long awaited (and twice delayed) Fruita trip falls through then I'll be there. Should know by Thursday.

I've been watching the weather and it sounds like it might be a good time to go check out the new Soapstone/Readstone Mtn complex.

If I make it up there I'll be sure to give a full report.

My wife and I are planning to hit the new Soapstone area on Sunday. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

And I'm looking forward to this Old Flowers Rd ride. I'm still torn on which bike. My HT is old and pretty unforgiving. I'll see what I feel like on Saturday morning...

I had been planning to do this ride at some point this summer. This seems like a good opportunity for a guided tour. Hope to make it.

Lets hope for some sunshine between now and then, or we may have to take a raincheck. Rode Towers Road in HTMP this morning (Thursday), and it was soft and slow going (20% increase in ride time). Old Flowers will likely be similar, especially in the north facing / shady areas. Still planning the ride as of now, but will post here if a change of plan is in order. Everyone check back here Friday night.

Cool, 2 ladies! Guess we'll have to keep the crude humor and belching to a minimum.

I'll assume everyone will be at JJ's at 6 and we'll meet Volkstech and his other half at the intersection of Buckhorn Canyon and Stove Prairie roads around 6:45.
