Question about locking out a RS Reba fork

Hi, posting this here since I've ridden with some of you and I trust and respect your opinions. i posted recently about geting my first FS, an '09 Fuji Outland Pro that overall I really like! Size is PERFECT. Paul and I went on a short ride the other day in Palmer and I was really digging it.

Only thing that has me wondering is the fork... a RockShox Reba (can't recall the specific model but pretty sure it says RL on it as well). It doesn't completely lock out. The bike is equipped with a remote lock-out by the way, if that matters. But anyway, when I click it to lock it out, it still compresses somewhat, maybe a half inch to an inch if I really stand on it? Is that normal?

My previous bike (GT Avalanche with a cheapo SR Suntour XCR) would go completely stiff, you couldn't get it to budge at all when it was locked out.

    Thanks!

Completely normal, the Reba is designed to offer some give in "lock out" mode.

That's pretty much the case with any RockShox motion control unit. They're designed to have a solid but not entirely locked out platform for climbing. That little bit of compression helps with absorbing small bumps and the blow-off valve will let the fork do its job when you hit something when locked out.

I have an '08 Reba Team and I've had some issues with the motion control leaking oil. When you lose oil the effectiveness of the lockout is much reduced and there will be more than that 20mm of give. I've heard the newer motion controls have much improved seals.

Great thanks for the input. I like how it feels and everything was just worried that might be an indicator of an issue. Thanks again! -Eric

Also, make sure the Gate Valve is all the way closed (righty tighty). If the Gate Valve is open, the fork won't even come close to locking out.

LOL I hear ya... for what it's worth, i DO own a fully rigid singlespeed. But for true mountain biking, I've gone squishy. My 48-yr old body can't take the abuse LOL.

there's nothing wrong with riding a rigid bike in the mountains

the same is true for a singlespeed

some of my most memorable rides above treeline were suspension-free and many of those were on a 1x1

Not arguing with you, I've done it too... but most of my memorable rides going forward will be on my full suspension Fuji.
