Working in Colorado Springs for several weeks, and have been staring hungrily at Pikes Peak every morning and night and wishing the snow cover gets less and less. Well today - the weather and forecast and ability to get transported to the summit - all fell into place for me.
This ended up being an EPIC ride of immense proportions!! Whatever it is you do - there is always one 'dream' that you have - and unfortunately 99.9% of people don't ever get to do them. Well for me - it was high alpine riding. Add a descent of 6,000+ft with ZERO road riding on singletrack, river crossings, mountain shadow riding, massive technical trail sections, stunningly beautiful scenery... Today I had everything fulfilled!
Elk Park Trail (652) to Barr Camp for break. Barr Camp trail into Manitou Springs.
Elk Park Trail to Barr Camp was the best trail I have ever ridden. It has it all. I did not see another person from the start of Elk Park Trail, until lunch at Barr Camp. And the Elk Park trail had everything!! Best individual trail I have ever ridden - not the hardest - but has everything and some of the best singletrack descents I have ridden.
Barr trail was a HUGE blast. Fast with so much rock and roots to fly over. A few hikers, but really maybe 10-15 the ENTIRE Barr Trail. The very bottom of Barr Trail (final couple hundred feet) was all largely spaced steps - but even that was fun in its own way. But from Barr Camp down until the very end was incredible - albeit different - than Elk Park Trail.
6,000 ft, 3.5-4 hours with lunch and photo stops all the time (I wore out my camera battery) HAHA.
In 20+ years MTB, this was the best day I have ever had on a bike.
Here are a few pics.
