    Palmer Park closed

Apparently the crowds gathering to watch the fire have prompted them to close Palmer Park (per KKTV). Just a heads up...

Confirmed. We spoke to a ranger there as we were leaving. He said there were just too many people and to much concern for new fires. It's scary dry in the park.

It went, there was 20 riders and it was hot as heck for them. I didn't race my self but had man jeep up watching looked like a blast that huge entrance fee kept me from doing the race. They got done just before the cops came up and closed all the trails and high drive. Dam this fire!!!

That fire is the suck. I pray for rain and no issues with the single track.

During 2002, I remember Cheyenne Canyon and the other parks that border Forest Service land being closed most of the summer. I would expect similar closures this year for as long as the fire is burning. Hopefully they will get it under control in the next 2 weeks or so.

Hopefully they do I think I would go crazy if it was closed summer long. Any alternatives yall can think of meanwhile? I typically only ride Palmer park.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park is currently open (bring $7 in cash), as is the Mt. Herman preserve in Monument. There really isn't much open in the "center" of town though.

I'm surprised Ute Valley Park isn't on the list...well...yet. Of course, I'm sure the smoke is pretty thick over there. I was considering heading up to the Falcon Trail today, but the smoke is super thick up this way this morning. Hopefully the winds will change soon, and push it back over the mountains.

Yeah, Stanley Canyon looked kinda gnarly this morning with an inversion pushing the smoke down the canyon. Hopefully that was just smoke--I don't want to think about the fire reaching the AFA...

I heard this morning that they projected the fire to be contained by July 17th. Hopefully that'll hold true, the smoke this morning is pretty ominous... Don't think I'll be doing any riding with this type of air quality.

I heard this, too. Seems like a ridiculous projection, given the fire is only 5% contained. But, they certainly know a heck of a lot more about these things than I do.

Access to the trails around Palmer Lake is closed as of this morning, too.

    Monument trails are still open...

Looks like the fire made a fairly serious push towards Rampart Reservoir last night:

I didn't realize that Pulpit Rock, Section 16, Ute Valley, Stratton Preserve and a few other parks were still open up to today, but they are now closed.

Keep your fingers crossed and think positive thoughts for the firefighters and the canyons up there. I just saw a picture that looked very much like the fire entering Queen's Canyon on the west side of the canyon....not good.
