    opportunity at Rabbit Mountain

Boulder County is reevaluating the management plan for Rabbit Mt Open Space. Possibilities, ie things to lobby for are singletrack connection from Lyons, a connection to Larimer County, and maybe another trail to the overlook so it's not an out and back. Please send comments thru the web or attend the meeting on 8/29. LOTS of potential. Thanks!!!

I have always thought the loop at Rabbit was a fun, and underrated, trail but its so short I can see why it doesn't get much fan fair. Would be a great addition to link up to the Hall / Picture Rock / Heil trails though.

I sent my comments in, thanks for the heads up DMD.

Important to note is that Boulder County owns 100% of the land between Lyons and Rabbit Mt. No land acquisition needed!

    opportunity at Rabbit Mountain

Re: Lyons to Rabbit mountain- eastern side of east ridge of stone canyon would seem to be preferred trail alignment. Imagine there would be some good terrain to work with. Got the ditch to cross though eventually if that route was chosen.
Does the initiation of updating management plan mean Boulder County POS priorities are changing from what was decided 1-2 years ago?

BoCo reevaluates management plans every 10 years or so to make us think they are listening to the population. So far, much of the renewed management plans have been little more than lip service but, in case with the Walker Review, user groups and interested parties have gone beyone OS and got the county commissioners involved to actually get things to happen. Seeing all of that happen recently, I think we could really stand to gain much from the Rabbit review.

Should non-Boulder county residents submit input?

Could someone provide some brief talking points? I'd like to provide input advocating for connecting open space (with mtb access) but I'm not familiar with the area or the finer points of the management plan.

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like Larimer County already owns a couple of parcels directly north of the Rabbit Mountain Open Space and they may touch at the corner. Seems like a good spot for some additional trail and could get a connector within 2.5 miles of Carter Lake

Done. Everybody needs to submit their comments on this one. I'm tired of grumbling under my breath about the crappy trail offering in Boulder County. It's so irritating to read about the great mountain bike specific trail development going on in communities across the US. We live in one of the most active counties in the country with a dense rider population...yet we don't get squat.

    SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS.

    "Yet we don't get squat."

Although I agree there could be more trails this statement is a bit silly.

bump. Today is the LAST DAY to submit comments for the Rabbit Mountain planning process. Here's some talking points via BMA...
    ************************************************** *

I support BMA's position on the Rabbit Mountain Management Plan. It includes:
A trail connection to Lyons. Our first choice for the connection would be over the ridge on the western edge of the property, our second choice would be via Dowe Flats.
Creating a trail to loop from the existing overlook trail, along the southern edge of the Little Thompson canyon, and heading east as far as feasible.Connecting to Larimer County's open space to the north.
Create a trail loop along the lower elevations of the property, south of the current trails.
Create access along 75th street, along with a trailhead. Create trails to connect with the rest of Rabbit Mountain, and consider opening existing ranch roads.
Leave open the possibility to connect with future regional trail systems.

Trail based recreation has demonstrated how BCPOS can create high quality user experiences and protect the cultural and natural resources at the same time. Rabbit Mountain trail resources have been paltry and suffer from trail outdated construction techniques that created trails that were not sustainable in the soils they were built in. BCPOS trail crews now have the expertise to create trails that will hold up and increase the service life of these assets. And when good trail experiences are available, users stay on the trail.

Creating a trail system on this property that would provide a trail experience of 2+ hours will greatly enhance all user's experiences.

Connectivity to Lyons, Larimer County, and the St Vrain Greenway are goals that should be high on BCPOS list of improvements to this open space park.

Hope all goes well with this. Sounds like you have a good active group advocating for you.
