O/T Steamboat RV camping & balloon festival?

We're thinking about going to the balloon festival in Steamboat this summer, but I can't seem to locate a near by campsite (1/2 a hour drive is OK) at Federal recreation, camping and tour reservation information - Recreation.gov. It's needs to be a bookable site and we prefer something scenic and somewhat private (not like those KOA campgrounds that feel like a parking lot). Any suggestions? BTW our van is 20ft long, but so it the truck... so a 40ft site is perfect.

Anyone been to the balloon festival? Was is worth it? I'd rather be riding, but I think the kids will love it.

It's pretty boring, unless it's a high wind day. Then, the mayhem to get them launched would be pretty entertaining

I assume you've already looked at the RV park on the North side of town. If that's booked, Steamboat Lake St. Park seems to be a good option as well.

Attending the balloon festival will leave plenty of time to ride. The KOA on the west side is the best/closest that has hookups, ect. It's not a typical KOA, on river lots of grass and trees, wouldn't consider it a parking lot.

Thanks for the reply guys, I will check out the suggested campgrounds.

I don't expect the event itself to be very exciting for me or the wife, but I'm pretty sure that my daughter is old enough (five) to go on a balloon ride. She just has such excitement and wonder for this world, it hard not to catch some of her stoke! That in itself makes the trip worth it, but of course some riding, beer and a nice campfire doesn't hurt!
