Kirk, you goon, are you out there? I need to get my gators back for the night ride tonight. Maybe we could go up north and I could just pull them off you 1/2 ingested corpse?

    Thursday...

I'd hit it Thursday, but have classes all day tomorrow (Weds). I'm thinking of putting a semi-epic together with some BOA folks for Saturday--interested? My plan is this: park at Cherryvale/Baseline and ride up Flaggstaff to Walker Ranch. It's mostly road, but I'm tired of fighting snow, and even if it's completely impractical to ride Walker, I'd still come out with a reasonable work-out, and lots of good views to boot. Whaddya say? Put some skinny XC tires on and hit the road? Obviously, I'll be SSing it, and would encourage others to do so as well. I haven't ridden up Flaggstaff since I was a roadie, and have never done it SS.

Riding up flag on a SS seems mildly insane, but hard core. There are parts I can barely make it up on my two ringed road bike....Good luck, seriously.

I'll ride again Thursday night. Can't do Saturday. It's Valentines day, and my wifes b-day. Doing so might have me waking up in a burning bed

    Flagstaff and Thurs PM...

I could do Thurs PM. Can't swing it tonight. Guess we can nail down the where and when tomorrow.

And yeah, Flagstaff via SS would definitely meet the "reasonable workout" threshold. Egads!

    ... and if we just ... IT'S A 32 x 19!!

How hard can it be? I'm not even remotely considering taking my 42 x 16 road bike up a grade like Flagstaff--that's f*cking insane--but I don't think a 32 x 19 could really be that hard, especially with some skinny xc tires...

    So, no takers?

I don't think I'm equipped for a night ride. All I've got is a Hella-type headlamp that I carry hiking--but pretty much never use it. I've never considered strapping it to my helmet, but I doubt it's bright enough. Any thoughts? (Aside from taping a handfull of mini-maglites to the bars.) I was really shooting for a daytime ride on Thurs, but I'd guess Scrub is the only other non-9to5 worker here? Lastly, how're the conditions at Hall? Hiel was so snowed in on Saturday that GF and I had to ride up LH Canyon instead!

It was still pretty fun, but the trail was completely unrideable.

32x19 would be doable for sure. I try to avoid Flagstaff in the winter, though. Snow on the side of the road narrows the shoulder significantly and the amount of gravel adds to the fun. Not to mention traffic. If you're looking for that kind of hill workout, how about Magnolia instead?

Hall's no good unless you can get there when the ground is frozen. If it's frozen, the dirt is good and the snow is all hardpacked. If the sun is shining on it, though, it will be a slushy slog through wet snow and slimy mud.

Would that be out of the saddle most of the time?

    Yep.

I'd be off the saddle and standing the whole way up. It sounds really greulling, but you get used to using your weight to turn the pedals around, with a bear-minimum of aerobic muscle activity (they do start to hurt, but not as bad as you'd think--if I can keep my cadence up!). Basically, you just shift your weight from pedal to pedal to pedal to pedal...and so on.

Remember how low I had my saddle on the New Year's Day romp? Well, it's always that low these days--nice and ghetto. I don't do really anything from the saddle except descending.

...That said, I probably won't be riding anywhere anytime soon, unless someone wants to pawn some DH tires off on me! It's gonna be a few days 'till anything works in this snow....
