    Monday 3/20. Where to Ride?

Wondering is the collective MTBR brain can help me out.

Looking to do a day trip in search of dry dirt on Monday. An hour or hour and half from Summit County.

So I think my choices as far as distance goes are

    Denver: Apex, Matthew Winters

    Salida: S Mountain

    Buff Creek:?

    Eagle:?

So, What say you? Where's the best chance of good riding and dry dirt?

    Thanks in Advance. Jay

Buff. Creek more or less dry.
Apex I would imagine would still have snow/mud in the trees.

I would imagine by Monday most of the front range will be ridable.

Salida is bone dry. Arkansas Hills Trail System (aka S-Mountain) and Methodist both riding great. By the 20th we may even be riding Cottonwood. I hear some people are riding it, but it's muddy up top. Chinooks are blowing though, won't be long.

But as of today you can ride 3+ hours without seeing any mud or re-tracing your steps. And there's Chicken Dinner.

Half of Summit County was here last weekend, probably they'll bring the other half with them today.

    Thanks TomP.
Looks like Salida it is. Haven't been down there, looking forward to it.

While I have your attention, was thinking of going to Moab towards the end of the month, but Salida is a hell of a lot closer. Whats the camping situation down there?

Easier than Moab, unless Moab has added a bunch of primitive camping near town.

I'm planning to put together a Salida camping tips page, have one but it's kind of dated. But a quick (winter) rundown:

Just east of town along the river there's a BLM free camping area called Salida East. It has pit toilets and some dispersed sites. It's mainly a river access facility (boat ramp), but lots of camping. Not far from the highway so it can be a bit noisy, but free and 5 minutes from town, 10 minutes riding to town.

There's railroad land across the river from downtown, and a jeep road that runs east. I used to recommend it, because the Union Pacific doesn't have any people in town and it's close, but it's gotten a little hobo'd out. Every once in a while you spot a needle over there. Technically not legal, but nobody ever gets a hand slapped over there. I no longer recommend it. But if you do camp there, figure out how to not be in sight of the town.

There are a couple commercial campgrounds, LMK if you need niceties.

Just rode it this afternoon. There are a few messy bits. A few places with snow/ice. Like, total of 200 feet of messy trail. And lots of moon dust in between. Totally rideable. GTG.
