Leave your guns at home when traveling to Lefthand Canyon

Shooting banned in parts of Lefthand Canyon

Part of Lefthand Canyon near Boulder has been closed to recreational shooting because the irresponsible discharge of firearms has endangered people using an off-highway road nearby, U.S. Forest officials said.
The 30-acre site known as the "Slot Canyon area" is adjacent to Lefthand Canyon Drive at mile post 4.5, according to District Ranger Christine Walsh.
She said people using the area have been subject to numerous "near misses" and that vandalism and other forms of boisterous behavior have resulted in the area's closing to recreational shooters.
"This is a last resort," said Walsh. "If we don't do something immediately, someone will get hurt. We are closing the smallest area possible to prevent an injury and provide for public safety."

Haven't seen this anywhere other than the Denver Post. You would think the Daily Camera would be all about this news.

    Yeah!

Now when I ride up that canyon on my road bike, I won't have to worry about being shot, and only worry about being run over by some gigantic 4X4!

Maybe they'll reopen the trail above the shooting area.. Assuming they'll be able to keep the shooters out.
Take the long cut, we'll get there eventually.

This closure is a prime example of what can happen when usage of a designated area are abused. Shoot the signs, they close your shooting range. Ride off trail and dangerously, they could close our trails.

Based on area for national forest...this stuff that is shutdown now fer shooting is regular old national forest land(e.g not national park, etc) I believe, but apparently they've designated it no shooting now...wonder how big the area is. This has been in the making for over 2 years...be real interesting to see how it's enforced. Seems like the USFS is understaffed in this (all?) district to be enforcing a ban like this....and I don't know about you, but if I were a forest ranger I don't think I'd want to tell some guy doing target practice with a .45 that:
    A. His old haunts are now illegal for shooting.
    B. He now gets a ticket.

Yep. Ride, shoot, etc responsibly with restraint and respect and within the law, you get to continue to use an area for your chosen form of entertainment. Abuse it and expect to loose it.

RE: the FS lack of manpower to enforce the restriction; The FS can enter into partnerships with the Sheriffs dept or DOW law enforcement officers if needed. I would think that if the problem is significant public safety they will devote resources to this.

Is this the shooting range that is visible from Lefthand Canyon Dr? If so I wouldn't think enforcement would be a big deal. Anytime Mr. Law enforcement guy is driving up the canyon he could just look over and see if anyone is shooting.

I saw a report this morning on the news. I guess people were shooting over the backstop and ricocheting bullets off rocks and they have had a bunch of close calls. You wouldn't believe the trash, old appliances, shotgun shell casings all over the place, looked like a trip to the dump. I'm not a perfect citizen, but these people are pigs.

i am an avid shooter and i actually agree with this. if you are going to treat a firearm irresponsibly and allow ricochet to endanger the lives of other people, you are not following basic firearms handing rules. and you probably shouldn't own or be around a gun. i hate to sound like such a stick in the mud, but i feel strongly about both bikes and guns, and i would never want someone creating a travesty with either.

    kinda like these guys!!

I agree with this as well but the one good thing about having a designated area is typically people will only go to this area and shoot. All this will do is send these guys to other areas that are more remote and do the same thing. The same thing goes for the OHV area, if the 4x4 guys didn't have this area, they probably would out be destroying some other area. Instead of just banning it completely, why not try to enforce some laws for a while and see if things can get back under control.

Well apparently the ban isn't all that effective, since someone was shooting large caliber semis Saturday afternoon up there
