Lair O' The Bear Ride Tonight

I Drove by lotb tonight headed down the hill - saw two riders heading up lotb. I bet they had an epic ride considering the park is closed - evidently the Jeffco fines for riding in closed parks is not enough to deter them. Funny thing - they clearly have more balls than brains - they left both of their cars parked across the road from the trailhead. Oh well.

That being said, does anyone know what the fine ( if any ) is for riding in a closed park? My guess is a warning.

Is the "upper" section closed as well?

I did see that parking lot/park area was certainly closed, along with the orange snow fence, there was a JeffCo truck and employee at the entrance, but as I drove up the canyon, it looked like the baricade was in place just past where the trail starts the climb up and away from the creek, blocking passage along the creek, but allowing you go up. I was driving and did need to pay some attention to the road, so I could have be mistaken.

Lair O' The Bear Ride Tonight

Checked the whole area out up there and all entrances to LOTB and the Bear Creek Trail are closed off (in a manner obvious that they do not want you in there) from the Bear Creek side. I'm not sure on the Indian Hills road side but would suspect the same from the JCOS website.

It's going to be interesting though as the weeks drag on here and guys get restless. I hope that at least the entire park closures (Apex, LOTB and bottom WR lot) reopen here in the next few weeks. I can't imagine they won't have poaching issues if it drags out too long. I've had the same thought on Betasso and others up that way as well. For now though, the best thing is to try and pitch in and help get them back in shape. Still though it would be nice to see some updated info or better communication on the JCOS website. Lots of inquiring minds wanting to know their grand plan.

And, not that it's my decision but maybe they should table the whole rather expensive and IMHO less than necessary Apex bathroom remodel. Those funds could go toward reclamation or...new trails or something crazy like that. I've lived here my whole life and even worked for JCOS in the 90's and I guess I just always thought the situation there (bathrooms and parking) was actually pretty decent.

    Received this info just today:

After dark and stormy days that inflicted great damage to parks and trails, you’ve demonstrated the bright spirit that lights the way to recovery for Jeffco Open Space Parks.

We are very grateful for your interest in volunteering for flood recovery projects. Since the flood waters receded, we have made comprehensive assessments of parks system wide and identified projects where volunteers can best assist.

Our first projects are listed here, Jefferson County Open Space on Eventbrite, where you can sign up to help right away.

Each week, we will notify you of new projects.

Because of the historic damage from the storms, flood recovery projects will continue into 2014. If you cannot make any of the events this year, we look forward to seeing you at projects next year, including large-group Trail Day events.

I agree that we should all stay off the trails while they are trying to reclaim them and I hope everyone respects that during this time. Hopefully we all help out as much as we can too and partner with them. It is lame that guys were up there if ignoring the obvious intentions of JCOS.

Honestly, on the fine thing and knowing a bit how JCOS operates from working for them I think that blatant poaching on Apex, LOTB, or lower WR actually could at this time get an offender a ticket and at a minimum an escort out for sure. On some of the other closed trails that are not as obviously closed (at parks that are open but have a few trails closed by means of a single sign stating the closure) it would probably be a warning. Just my guess based on my history with JCOS. Tickets for this would probably be about $50 though based on what I know and have seen of the stats from previous years JCOS is VERY lenient about giving out tickets with the bulk of them being for dog off leash and most years I believe they hand out less than 30 of those. MTB-related tickets are actually very rare...maybe in single digits if that most years. Still at this time I don't think they would be as lenient with these closures especially when people are displaying blatant disregard as these guys apparently were.

And I am sorry for the rant on Apex but it's just one of those things you look at and wonder about...especially now that resources are needed just to get them back to where things were.
