New question here. kids bikes ... whatchya got?

i'm so bummed that the "trail kids" consignment store up in boulder went out of business... (traded a hand-me-down boys bike for a bike for my daughter last year).

my son is ready to upgrade from his 12" bike to a 16" bike (birthday next week), and my daughter is looking to upgrade her bike (20") to one w/ gears and handbrakes. heck, i'm wondering if she could even move on up to a 24" ride?? (birthday september).

anyway, i refuse to buy new for this age, since they outgrow them so d*mn fast.

anybody selling? or better yet, any parents wanna trade for either of the above bikes?

PM if interested. in the meantime, i'll hit up craigslist.

    thanks.

i'm way more concerned w/ acquiring rather than w/ parting (we've got younger-ins in the extended family to hand down, so i'm not looking to sell anything here).

CL has some upgrade possibilities, but i may have to drive out to china just to confirm.

My niece has outgrown a 2006 Hotrock A1 FS 24 21-Speed Girls, that is unfortunately, barely used. Let me know if you are interested, I will have to talk to her about it.

My son has a freakin' awesome 24" Scott Scale JR with XT components and a shock that actually works. It weighs all of 23#'s He rocks on it!!! He will soon be outgrowing it and it will be put up for sale. He's had many bikes, but this is by far the best bike out there for a kid. It is built to actually be ridden on singletrack.

Good idea buyin' used. My middle one is going to need a 20" soon with gears. His 475lb 16" bike ain't cuttin' it anymore.

I bought my son an older Schwinn BMX mini a few years back after having bought a 416lb "Mini" at Dick's and watching him struggle with the mass. The Schwinn weighs maybe 16lbs. Has a freewheel and a hand break, it's been great.

He's starting to outgrow it and I've been shopping every now and then but the one thing that always seems true is that the reach on the brake levers is set for someone with hands like Shaq. There's no way in hell my son could use those and it makes me wonder what other sort of things (shift effort?) aren't spec'd for the little people.

That's not bad considering he/she/it could probably ride the thing until they were 5ft+ tall.

When I was looking for mini's for my mini, there were Ti framed, Carbon forked, Chris King wheeled bikes, sub 11lb, $2k+ bikes... ...for sub 75lb kids.

The typical kid would've outgrown that bike (height wise) by the time they were 8

FWIW, he ended up getting a 10+ yr old 15lb Schwinn at $70
