ha, yeah I was just looking at that yesterday. They're going to need some serious shovel time to have much open trail wise by memorial day.

I was up at A-Basin riding a foot of powder today. Not spring slush, powder at top. Keystone looked 100% ready for skis.

Hopefully it opens in July. I'm not kidding. There is so much snow up there you have to go see it yourself, and bring a board or skis.

This time of year the snow can melt fast but this weather pattern is going to have to do a 180 and the long range forecast isn't promising.

The few golfers I work with up there say that it's ok, but breck is better & the course in eagle is better than either of them.

It was snowing when I left work in Breck yet again today... this crap is unreal!!!

Breck on my way into work this morning... it was the first day of SUMMER break for my wife's students today... I thought it looked more like xmas break!

This sucks. Been snowing every day since I got back from spring training. I drove an hour and a half each way to ride in the rain in Salida yesterday. Tomorrow I'm just giving up and skinning up to Lake Chutes. I know better than to be in Breck during mud season but came back early this year.

As I'm sure most have heard Keystone will not have any bike trails open this weekend. I walked some of the lower trails a few days ago and there was still at least a foot of snow on them, and we have gotten more snow since then. It is supposed to be warm through this weekend and we will check them again early week and evaluate if it is worth doing some shovel work on them.

We will be open this weekend for tubing and a terrain park in the summit area. On Saturday and Sunday there will be live music. Saturday there will be a Strider Cup race for the kids in the base area and on Sunday there will be a BMX stunt show. The weather is looking good till then so maybe the lower ones. I wouldn't expect the upper trails to be ready till June 20 or later depending on how much they shovel. Even then they'll still be muddy. On the 5th you'll do better to go to Sol Vista.

I had a good chat with a couple Keystone bikepark guys yesterday while my little 2 year old was ripping it in the Strider Cup. They said that there is still about one foot of snow in the trees and it depends on the weather this week if they will open next weekend or not. If anything it will be mid-section down that would be open but they said its a 50/50 shot. I did get some sweet shots of their demos though. Lots of goodies left from last year and some sick new whips as well! 2010/2011 Trek Scratch, 2010/2011 Trek Sessions! Tons of Remedy's as well!
    enjoy..

Most Colorado resorts are on Forrest Service land, the resorts do not make the decision when to open or close, at least that's my understanding.

the resorts have a choice, they can pick a date in the beginning of the season when they apply for the permits to run.....

I always thought they shut down for wildlife migration. Anyways, I guess it makes sense to shut down when they do. They're basically staying open for those that already have season passes, not so much for tourists.
Here's a pic I took from the Keystone bridge yesterday.

Wildlife constraints vary from area to area but generally the ski area operating seasons are dictated by business parameters rather than environmental ones.

Huh, interesting. I always thought they closed early due to wildlife restrictions as well. What type of business parameters are you referring to?

One is the permit dates but also they often cannot make enough money to cover operating costs keeping employees around & running lifts late season. Not enough season pass revenue to cover costs. It's all about the money not the skier experience- nothing personal it's just business.

Plus I've always speculated the employees are ready to get off the mountain after the season.

Keystone Bike Park will NOT be open June 4-5. Opening dates are weather dependent. Please stay tuned for more information or call 800-354-4386.

looks like it will be at least another week before opening weekend!

I thought that was a weird move with the snowpack this year. Anyway, let's ride when stuff dries out.

Didn't they not open until June 17th last year? I went on open day but don't remember the date. It happen to snow the night before.
Went over to the village today. Keystone Sports was closed. Was hoping to get some info from those guys. It's staying warm here now, still quite a bit of snow to clear off.

We've been hiking trails over the past few days and shoveling the snow off. At this point I'd say that its looking good to open most of the trails below the midstation for next weekend. The sunny hot days have been helping a lot. Still several feet of snow on the higher trails so it'll be a while for those.

    nothing on the website though???

Is it worth it or should i just wait till it's all open? Are the double blacks the same as Whistler?

Keystone is barely worth the lift ticket when all the trails are open. It will be a big disappointment to drive there and pay to ride when only the lowest 350 vertical feet are open. Sorry, keystone trail crew if this comes off as an insult (I know why you can't build more stuff) but it's a fact.

Damn, harsh words. I think its totally worth it when all the trails are open. I even prefer it over the warrior princess and all their new trails and jumps and stuff. But that's just me.

Well I went to Keystone today. From mid-mountain down things are good. All I did was lapped Wild Thing so I can't say much for any other trails. Oh, part of River Run was closed today due to the trail getting pretty ripped up on Saturday. (mud) I was told hopefully early July until they open up top.
