Kyle Henley here, member of the JCOS Trails Use Task Force. Over the last few months we've been working on the idea of proposing that JCOS open up one or two parks for night time use. As most of you know, there are a limited number of Front Range locations that accommodate night time riding, and it is not currently permitted at JCOS parks. Obviously, it would be great to have a few more options.
Anyway, before we take a proposal to JCOS staff and the Open Space Advisory Council (OSAC), we wanted to gauge support/interest among various user groups. Members of TUTF have developed a survey that to help in that endeavor. To be clear, this is not an official JCOS survey; we are doing this independently in hopes of developing a proposal to take to the county at some point in the future, hopefully in October. It may or may not prove to be viable, but several of us on the TUTF would like to give it a try.
You can take the survey HERE. Feel free to pass the survey link along to your friends or other interested parties.
Great initiativie! I'd really really like to see this happen, I love night riding but can only take so much Green Mountain and not much else within a close drive. With days getting shorter I love to use the JCOS one hour after sunset rule but it only lasts for so long. This really is what Golden riding is lacking. I like what the Springs does, open til 11 p.m. in the Summer, 9 p.m. during the Winter. This would be ideal!
Thanks. I, too, get burned out on GM and MM. It would be really nice to have some other options. Hopefully we can present it in a way that JCOS will support. We feel like this is a good first step.
Survey sent.
I did make a general comment on the what county do you live in section, since there was no place for general comments.
I will PM you too.
Thanks - hope this works out!
Thanks for initiating this. I just got a set of lights and could see myself riding Chimney Gulch solo, but for other parks I'd be interested in any night group rides which emerge.
Thumbsup RK, thanks. Despite getting tired of GM and MM for nite rides, those places remain popular maybe demonstrating demand. +1 to CS 11pm summer/9pm winter cutoffs.
Not a matter of if they patrol, it is not legal that is why OP is going this route. We do "nite rides" but anything in a jeffco park we are out within the curfew of one hour after sunset.
I am so stoked that JC would even CONSIDER this, thank you!!!
Man, not only is night riding fun but with work and a family, hell it's the only time I ride!!
Awesome Waning Gibbous Moon out there BTW.
Again, Kyle. Thank the powers that be for even thinking about it!!! As I mentioned in the survey, I would bring my family, shop, hike, dine, Splash... etc. in JeffCo, stay the night at a friends who also has kids and night ride with him.
just to clarify (check his post): this is being forwarded by the trails use task force, a citizen subcommittee... JCOS (currently) *isn't* considering this.
more power to TUTF, but i'm not holding my breath. at least in the past JCOS was pretty steadfast in citing "wildlife refuge" as a primary reason for no night riding... that is, they feel that all the grr-animals have to put up w/ us during the daylight, so nighttime is their reprieve.

I guess I did miss that...
I still think it's great that it's at least being brought up. I repeat what I said about traveling for night rides, etc. I also won't hold my breath but again, thanks for bringing to the table.
Just saw this post in another thread. What if a "night ride" was set up as a trial at one of the Jeffco parks? COMBA and some volunteers could set-up a little "base camp" where people could check in and check out so as to make sure everyone makes it. Could have volunteer riders with radios/phones to let "base camp" know of any problems out on the trail.
Just thought it might be another way to try to introduce the concept of night riding to Jeffco. Once a month would not put that much stress on the wildlife. Check in/check out might help demonstrate responsibility. Man, it would be really nice to have some legal night time riding in Jeffco Open Space!
Please don't take this the wrong way. My personal views are pretty liberal when it comes to daylight trail access.
But, based on my personal experiences while young and doing quite a bit of hunting at night I would respectfully disagree with you on this point. If you choose to pursue it, I would be prepared to cite some references that back up your statements.
