You think it looks bad now, I think it looks great!

The car pic on Apple Valley is cars they have pulled out of the river. There's another similar collection on the SE corner of 36/66 east of Lyons.

So am I right in reading that Lyons or parts of Lyons still does not sewer/gas/water?

The pictures are intense, looks like there's still a lot to do up there. Thanks for the report

I went up to Lyons on Saturday to order some new wheels at Redstone. I drove around the downtown area a little bit and I think there was a large group of volunteers working along the river banks. The guys at Redstone were great and said they were hearing rumors that Hall Ranch might reopen this coming weekend. They also recommended stopping at the St. Vrain market for lunch; great suggestion, I got a great deli sandwich! Talking with the gals behind the counter while they made my order, I mentioned how it was my first time in town since the flood and was surprised at the amount of damage. They commented that they are hearing that from a lot of returning visitors, but they are amazed at how much has already been cleaned up!

Both Redstone and the St. Vrain Market employees were very appreciative of my business. I would really encourage everyone to visit and help out by spending a few bucks at Lyons businesses if you can!

I haven't heard that one but Heil/Picture Rock is slated to open Friday.

Its a face painted on the back of a road sign.

About half of Lyons has sewer gas and water. The rest of town, except those hardest hit, will be back online by mid Nov. There are still plenty of people that don't even have electricity yet. We just got gas, sewer, and water at Redstone Cyclery about a week and a half ago.

Heil should open from the Lyons side only this Fri. Hall will not likely open until hwy 7 opens (forecast for 12/1).

If you come up to Lyons, the local economy would love it if you bought a coffee, beer, sammich, a tube. A little goes a long way. We need all the help we can get.

Yeah. A lot of the towns utilities were alongside the water so when the rivers blew up, they blew out water and sewer lines also. Town is working incredibly hard getting water and sewer lines back online. Gas is ready to go but they won't turn gas on until the water is up for safety concerns.

Lyons has gone from looking like a warzone to now looking like a cleanup and construction zone. Beware the orange cones and 25mph speed limit everywhere.

I took over 225 and 98% of them were while I was driving! On the way up to Estes there were plenty of photo ops over there and over there but nowhere to pull over so I shot through my windshield or out side windows. While keeping my eye on the road, of course. My main mission was to document the opening of 36 in my meager fashion, next time I'm going to stroll about the town.

I got plenty more pics of the devastation but I just wanted to show that Lyons is on the mend. Steve, take a camera when you go up there.

I might have mentioned this on my other flood threads but I'd listened to an interview with the governor of Vermont who met with our governor, discussing how he coped with his state's being devastated from some hurricane a few years back.

Two years later the state is just about back to "normal". (we're two months out). He said one of the most important things he learned (referring to the repair of roads and bridges and such) was to forget the permit process, just get the guys who do that type of repair together and let them work it out. Fund their efforts and it's almost magical how quickly stuff can get done by just sweat and hard labor. Witness the opening of 36 way ahead of projected schedule.

CDOT has always said it was most important to get roads (and bridges) in place, however "temporary" in nature, to allow traffic to pass and be plowable. If you've seen what 36 looked like just after the flood, it's totally remarkable the progress they made. One step at a time by crews who know what they're doing and it gets done.

We were in Estes over the weekend for our anniversary. They have done a good job cleaning up over there but still no power/water/sewer in areas. Going back down 7 to Nederland was amazing where some of the hills are just gone. It's neat to contract the pictures you posted when you could Dave and contrast them to XCguys. Still all jacked up but worlds apart.

rmac - ha! yeah, probably so. But when every other car passing you is rubbernecking and taking photos while driving I guess it gets old (and sketchy). Slow down, be safe, etc. Life is better when you're not behind the wheel of a car. I think we can all agree to that. That's all. We welcome the company in town

Kaj - St Vrain's sammiches are dope. I had one today.

ummm...this is nuts. He's saying just watch out for others. ignazjr (I don't mean to speak for you, but I feel I understand what you're conveying) did not mean to say xcguy wasn't watching/being safe, but recent experiences have made ignazjr a bit sensitive to things of that sort. I can see how it was taken that way in terms of xcguy, though.

As far as your response, brokefork...Ignazjr recommended to get out of your car and enjoy what you can/want to up there...thus, possibly, being a bit safer for everyone as well. In no way did he imply what you're saying.

....The instability shown here sure can be astounding.

No personal attacks, just stressing safety above all else. There is a lot going on up here and its easy to be distracted. Both my wife and I have been nearly hit by distracted drivers more than once.

Again, no offense intended. I am simply stating that its best for all parties involved that, if you are driving a car, please focus your attention on that. Same as pre flood. Let's keep the roads safe.

Like the nice old folks from Nebraska that almost got a Tahoe enema coming home Sunday. Going around a right hand corner and they jam the brakes and stop to take pictures of elk in the lane, not the shoulder, the lane of traffic. I locked it up to avoid hitting them and nearly put it in the ditch. As I'm screeching to a halt the elk just look up, turn around, and slowly start grazing in the opposite direction. Not more than a mile further down the road there is a guy coming the opposite direction with his arm out the window taking pictures of Longs peak half way across the double yellow.

Not that XC was "that guy" or anything. Just too many people do not have any sense of what is around them or the consequences of their actions on others.

I'd agree with Gearwhine that Ignazjr's statement wasn't intended that way. Living in a place where people gawk from their cars, paying more attention to whatever they're looking at than where they're going is more than annoying, it's dangerous. Sightseeing is fine, just don't do it from your car when you are the driver.

Working on new slogan for town- if you come to Lyons to gawk don't forget to shop.
Support has been great for homeowners, cdot roads, and town infrastructure. Homeowners impacted are dealing with red tape insurance, banks, rebuild regulations - frustrating. Many people have been displaced from their homes for 6+ weeks. Most people are happy even though life is not exactly the same. Certain individuals may be highly irritable.
Small businesses and self employed definitely need the business- only support for them as I understand were SBA loans. A loan to take on more debt doesn't sound too appealing. Some places have folded already and there will be more.
Lots of cone zones in town, us 36 is pretty tight and not your typical highway design such as the arc of turns and undulations in road.
Ideally people come to town ride some trails, have fun, and maybe buy some **** from Redstone, leave their bikes for a tune-up. Support a local shop that has been an asset to the community, provides trail work (much will be needed in the future), and for obvious reasons provides good service and competitive pricing with the internets.

wow, the oversensitivity displayed in this thread is a little surprising. I guess people want to never be asked to make sure to watch the road, to consider getting out of their car to enjoy a town, etc. Instead, they'd rather turn that around and make the person asking out to be a jerk?

I for one would have liked to see the pics. I also think it's reasonable to say "be careful in a construction zone", and reasonable to say "hey, come enjoy our town, get out of your car and walk around". I would not take offense at any of it. And I hope to make it up there soon, to stop into the bike shop and introduce myself and buy something I don't need, to grab some grub at a local establishment, and -- I can't help myself -- gawk at the flood damage.

I will admit that I've been out of sorts lately, so apologies if I did offend. I rode my bike around town and took some pics this morning. Didn't go up Apple Valley or much out of town to the East. I'd put them up on MTBR but uploading pics here with commentary is kind of a pain. You can check 'em out on the Redstone FB page. You don't need to be a FB person to look at the photos. Pics are here:
