    2. DWF on a line above Edna Mae

    3. DWF with the Brooklyn, puttin out the vibe.

Sure am happy we got out yesterday, the snow is piling up fast around here.

Well you're kind, and that's debatable, but what's perfectly clear is that it isn't anywhere near that league. That there be the real thing.

It's certainly not intentional. In fact, that ride just happened to be a coincidonk. Godzilla, FunkMaster, and myself where there to get a ride in the AM and meet with another guy who was going to show me some buses. Turned out that he couldn't ride with us, and then we saw Kristian and Nickle and some others start to show up for a ride of their own, so we hooked up with them. Good luck on our part. Even better luck was actually ending my bus search.

If you really want to put this ride into perspective, it took us about 3-hours to cover around 5-miles and it involved a number of crashes, blood & gore, the occasional bike repair and I was at max BPM the whole time. Seriously.

But what a great ride and a great day for it! It just doesn't get any better than that.

DWF doesn't strike me as someone who does anything half-@ssed, so i suspect it would be more along these lines:

So let me understand this. You've got this 8K bike, that's gonna be hauled around by a pile of junk that is one of the most polluting cars on the planet. A car that burns so inefficiently, you can smell the completely unburned gas vapors when one passes the paceline, albeit barely.

Just drop in a nice tdi engine and leave those roadies in the dust. Run biodiesel, or even give it the wvo conversion and trail the scent of fries.

You'll need a bit more clearance to hit those rollers with the bus, though.

1st, stop polluting this beautiful thread and quit projecting your inability to properly maintain your vehicle on the rest of us.

2nd, you have to combine at least a couple of my bikes for $8K be be anywhere near a valid number.

3rd, MY bus (not that one, but something like it) is going to be powered by a couple hundred fuel injected Porsche ponies harnessed to a Porsche 5-spd tranny. She's going to be so clean, flowers will bloom, butterflies will emerge, amphibians will make a comeback, and rain forests will regenerate as I drive by.

I looked into the TDI angle since we have a TDI Jetta, but converting an old Type 2 bus from aircooled to watercooled and diesel with all that brings is just too much. This won't be our daily driver, it's going to be our "Team" vehicle and lots of it will get written off as advertising.

No 40+ year old vehicle is going to handle like a modern car unless you do something about it. Do you think it's going to handle worse than a pickup truck with a camper on it or a Winnebago?

Here's one that seems to handle OK.

Outstanding riding. You set the bar on a new level. The lines are incredible.

I like the pictures. They look great - but they cannot convey the insanity of the stuff you rolled down. This is pro level.

Dang, you guys got some good shots! I didn't realize there were this many cameras out and firing. I like rides that have a pace that tolerates picture taking. Thanks.

Dave, that's a badass pic. It captures just how badly I blew that line.

Dave, that's a badass pic. It captures just how badly I blew that line.
Actually, from this angle it looks like you had it.

I did miss it the first time.

That's the very thing that kept me from ever learning to surf - having grown up in CO, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was some big toothy thing just out of sight below me, waiting to tear me in half. Kind of took the appeal out of it for me...

Shite! I missed that one too. I do need bifocals though, so I don't know if it's too subtle or not.

Is that Kalalau, Nooby? Did you get to do any riding (on the island, not Kalalau)? I lived in Kapaa from '96 to '98 and wish I could afford to go back for good. Most of the trails we used to ride were created and maintained by the MC clubs there, with a few exceptions, user conflict was almost unknown. I worked at Bicycle John's in Lihue for awhile.

    yep. Kalalau

No riding yet. Didn't really bring anything(shoes, shorts) but might rent a bike if there anything good. Any recommendations?

I lived on maui in '97. Looking to rent a surfboard and do some surfing probably in a couple of days after I do some stuff with Mrs. nOOby.

I used to ride Sleeping Giant (now closed to bikes), Kalepa Ridge, Powerline (no singletrack but some good elevation gain / loss with spectacular view, especially when it's raining - about 12 miles from the arboretum (behind Kapaa) to Princeville over a pass. There are quite a few other trails on the East side alone, particularly in Anahola Valley, but it's been a while since I was there and I've heard that alot of trails have been turned to condos, etc... so it would make sense to check with the shops. I did PM MTBKauai (here on mtbr) once after he posted some pics and it sounds like he knows of alot of good riding on the West side, past Wiamea, it might be worth sending him a message if you have enough time. There are (or were) also some pretty serious riders on the North Shore out of a shop in Hanalei, you might ask what they recommend, assuming the shop is still there.

I have no idea what that is Dave (I mean, I know they are holy rollers but..) thanks for bringing this post back to the front of the line. Now I can feel puny and wussified (Nickle's word!) all over again in the presence of such riding skills - wow, I mean wow are those some crazy lines and skills

Onward to the next Holy Roller-style post

Holy quads o' fire - I've ridden "the canyon" before, but we'd always just called it "Captain Jack's". Fortunately I didn't realize that we were going to what I'd previously recognized as "the top" until it was too late.

That's a great perspective on the roller Kchri.
