    Crested Butte July 4th

So we had a wonderful time in Crested Butte over the weekend, after finding a great camp site up Brush Creek Road we decided to do a quick ride up Strand Hills Tr, loved it so much we climbed back up and did Strand Bonus, planned to ride Canal up and cross the river but there was so much water we had to turn back down and wade through the Canal at the exit.
On Saturday morning we decided to ride Dear Creek Trail, again trail conditions were perfect, lots of water but no snow. Taking Dear Creek to Gothic, back up the road we jumped back onto Upper Loop, then Upper Upper then rode Brush Creek Rd back to the campground, loved how rocky and challenging these trails were.
Unfortunately this was my last ride of the weekend as I took a hard header coming down Dear Creek breaking my helmet and bruising both kneeds and elbows. Wanted to say sorry to BDKeg, will keep your number and call you next ride for sure.
As for trail conditions I ran into some guy and his wife named Dave and Jennifer Wilson who camped next to us, they said Doctors park is good to go but Teocalli is out. There is so much snow up high, especially west up near Lake Irwin I could see snow being an issue most of the summer.
We drove up slate river road trying to cross over to Washington Gulch but its gonna be another month, slides were large and still 10 feet deep or more. 2 folks rode over the top and said it took hours just hiking over all the large slide sections.
OK, enough with the blog, here are some pictures

Sweet. I saw your bruises on the trail when I rode it on Sunday. It was still awesome.

I found the good news about all the water was that I got to ride trails I would not have.

I had a great time there as well, was really impressed even with many of the trails still not rideable. Cannot wait to go back!

nice! glad the weather was nice all weekend. Looks like you had some good rides, strand is definitely one of my favorites. I ended up staying pretty close to town and linking CBMR trails to snodgrass to lupine to town for beers then back to Mt. CB, then rode upper/tony's and lower loop. Awesome weekend for sure!

Nice. I rode the Upper-Strand-Deer CK-Snodgrass loop on Sat, too. Probably crossed paths somewhere.

Always a good time in CB. Also got some great trail time with my kids on Lower loop and the CBMR trails. And crammed in the 1/3 marathon on Mon and a quick climb up to Green Lake yesterday.

    Strand goodness:

Yes, A great weekend. We must have crossed paths.

Trails were in good shape. Perhaps a little dusty but at least the biting flies are not out yet.

I don't think the road is going to open this year for shuttlers.

I've hiked through worse to get to 401. Two summers ago I went up late June/early July-ish. Schofield was fine, dh singletrack was fine, but everything in between was snowy. I postholed for about an hour carrying my bike. It was still one of the best rides I've ever done.

nice 401 pictures. I was thinking about spinning up gothic today, but decided against it cause i figured there would still be a ton of snow. We got quite a bit of rain tonight so this is going to help the melt right along.

It's going to be a while. Once the snow melts, they'll still need to clear some rock slides and repair the road bed (for automobile traffic). The trail is still basically covered in deep snow, there are occasional glimpses of trail, but it was easier to ride back down the road, and do the trail as an out-n-back for now.

The first pic is looking back down at a deep snow field covering the road. The second is the snow on the road going up towards the pass.

most likely schofield is not going to open this year...the "plug" by emerald lake is huge, so no shuttle rides to the top.

Slate River up and over Washington Gulch is very ridable with a few sections of snow to walk over. Paradise Divide looks pretty snowed in. Mosquitoes are vicious...Nice photos!

What do you mean by the "plug"? You mean that gigantic snow drift that's covering the road?
