    Crested Butte / Gunnison

Hey I am going go camp and bike in the Crested Butte/ Gunnison area next week for four and a half days.

Looking for a good spot to camp. (I am tent camping and have a water purifier. Forest service dispersed camping is cool. A place to poo with a roof on it within a couple miles is good.)

Also what are the must hit trails? 401? Hartman rocks? Doctor park? Reno/flag/bear?

I like trails like Mountain Lion, Chimney Gulch, Apex, White Ranch, etc. Decent climbs with fast techy descents.

Thanks a ton. If your going to be out there lets ride!

CB and Gunnison are in the other forum, Western Slope.
If you don't do it this year, you'll be one year older when you do.

You should prob check the conditions. 401 and Deadmans loop dont' appear ready yet.

Yeah it's on the western slope (ah, trick question is Salida Western Slope or Front Range, meaning, which of the mtbr forums is applicable?? Hmm?).

But aren't there maybe some people on this forum that could offer the dude some simple advice? Don't some of us know? Is the traffic on W. Slope high enough that he'll get timely advice.

OP: In my experience dispersed camping really close to CB is a PITA. There are restrictions as to where it's OK to camp, and on a busy weekend it can be a real hit and miss prospect trying to find a spot that's open and available.

Hartman Rocks in Gunny is one of the best places for dispersed camping in all of CO. The only poop shacks I know of are right in the entrance areas, but the areas where one can camp in relative isolation are many.

That's about all I have to say about that just now.

Across the various forums (Front Range, Western Slope, Passion, Vacations) there have been at least 4-5 threads started about CB in the last week. There's some really good information in those.

    CB campsites

I was just there, so I'll throw out some options off the top of my head...

Oh Be Joyful up Slate River Road (has a pooper)
Additional sites available further up Slate River Road (no pooper)
Sites available up Washington Gulch Road (no pooper)
Sites along Cement Creek Road (8-9 miles south of CB, no pooper)
A few sites up Gothic Road (no pooper)
