The City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department, in coordination with The Nature Conservancy, will be conducting a prescribed fire at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area this Thursday or Friday (01-26/01-27). The burn is dependant on weather and resource availability.
The objective of the burn is to control smooth brome, cheat grass and other non-natives and promote the conversion from non-natives to native vegetation. Historically, much of the valley at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area supported native mixed and tallgrass prairie. Today the site hosts an undesirable occurance of many noxious weeds, which reduce habitat value. The Natural Area will be closed when the burn is taking place.
Smoke advisory signs will be posted along roads, trails, and parking lots. A Natural Areas Department representative will inform visitors of the prescribed fire and closures. Officials will closely monitor smoke dispersal to avoid impacts to motorists and residents. To mitigate concerns, the Natural Areas Department will only burn under advantageous conditions.
Concerns or questions regarding this burn can be directed to Rick Bachand (Natural Areas Environmental Planner) at (970) 416-2183 or the Natural Areas Department at (970) 416-2815
