Best to Avoid Buffalo Creek Area June 8 & 9

Just an FYI, found out that there's a competitive trail ride for equestrians on the Colorado Trail and a number of trails in BC on the 8th and 9th. There are going to be a lot of horses, and horse poop, to avoid. I got stuck in it last year and although most of the people were quite nice it was a frustrating ride.

Was planning on heading up there for the first time next weekend. Have a free place to stay in Pine. Any clue what routes they will be taking for this event?

Not sure what the exact routes are. They're starting at the CT off 126. I saw a bunch on the CT and Redskin Creek trail and Gashouse last year. My guess, and this is only a guess, is that coming out of Pine Valley and then riding Sandy and Baldy would be your best bet to avoid the majority. From what I read sounds like they start early so a ride later in the day might be good too.

damn....i'd avoid it if you can't ride the CO trail. That section of the CO trail and the green mountain loop are AMAZING!

maybe their horses will kick some of the damn sand off the trails. it's getting pretty obnoxious. I was really wanting to plow it all off the trails. some sections felt like riding in a sand box.

Why? I've only ever ridden it on weekends, and I've rode whole sections of trail without seeing a single person. It was eerie today. I rode for 14 miles before seeing another rider at the top of nice kitty.

unless it's an all day event, i'm sure you can time your route to avoid them--easily.

the horse nuggets will improve the grip on the sandy sections :P

I have been there when this was going on. It was not a big deal as it was 50 or so horses but they were spread out along the course. I think they were mostly on the two track roads as well (Miller's maybe).

We were at Staunton yesterday for the first time and came across a group of almost 100 horses!! It was crazy. We stopped for 10 min at least to let them pass and then the trail was a dusty mess that reminded me of the Grand Canyon following some mules. I'm not typically one to complain about equestrians but a group of 100 of ANYTHING is a bad idea.
