I would say get the Xt pedals. I have heard of quite a few of the XTR's failing. though they might have fixed the problem I can attest to how will the XT's hold up. I have one pair that is about 2.5 years old and have seen alot of use, rock strikes, dirt, mud, etc and they are still running like new (though they look a little beat now)

as a reference I am 260 lbs as well and ride fairly aggressively.

I ride XT Pedals, best quality/durability and bang for the buck in my opinion. I have also heard of issues with the XTR Trail pedals, see here: XTR Trail Pedal FAIL!!! Again!

Pedals take a lot of abuse, IMO just get the cheapest that works well enough and understand that they aren't going to last forever. XT and XTR pedals are pretty close to the same thing, but the latter costs twice as much.

FWIW, if you aren't set on Shimano, Time ATACs are still really hard to beat, I have a set that's out-lasted 3 frames.

I stopped by my LBS and compared the xt to the 540. I actually like the 540 just as much. Very similar to what I have been using and essentially weighed the same thing as the xt.

while I will agree that the 540 are some pretty decent pedals I would really steer to the XT's still. they have much better materials in pretty much every spot. I would put money on that they last much much longer.
